These days, it seems like you can't flip on the TV without seeing one of the "reality" shows about paranormal investigations; what started out as a relatively underground hobby that very few people took seriously has blossomed into a full-scale cultural phenomenon.
From the cheesy, scripted introductions to the predictable "oh my god, what was that?!" shrieks after every innocent sound, these shows provide both entertainment and sources of eye-rolling for audiences everywhere. For my part, I do believe in the afterlife, but I also don't think that most spirits are hanging around waiting to ham it up the minute a TV crew arrives.
The movie Grave Encounters has a pretty neat premise, all things considered. It's the tried-and-true formula of found-footage film but set within the boundaries of one of these paranormal research cable shows. »

As a brand new found footage-based TV show is announced, Simon wonders if it's time to admit that found footage fatigue has long since kicked in...
Earlier this week, news rolled in that Paul W S Anderson was the latest to investigate jumping aboard the found footage bandwagon. It’s a bandwagon that, in its recent guise, spluttered back into life with Cloverfield and Paranormal Activity, and continues to generate a notable number of projects. You’d hardly accuse it of taking over cinema, but it’s still a fad that doesn’t seem to have too many other places to go.
Paul W S Anderson is now looking to take it to the small screen, with The Reel, a psychological thriller series which follows a documentarian on the search for proof of the supernatural. The show is in development now, with Anderson and Jeremy Bolt executive producing, based on »
Stop us if you've already heard this one ... a group of kids head into a supposedly haunted location to investigate when they find out that said location is actually the real deal. Cue screaming and running. Sound familiar? Ya think?
In any event, according to Bloody Disgusting Gulliver's Travels, Monsters vs Aliens and Shark Tale director Rob Letterman is getting behind the camera for Universal Pictures' new supernatural horror, Paranormalists.
Syfy is producing the project that's "loosely based on" their hit show "Ghost Hunters." It's a found footage project that's said to follow a group of stoner kids that claim to rid haunted houses of ghosts and poltergeists, only they're just ripping off a slew of gullible individuals. In an obvious turn of events, they end up in a house that's actually haunted.
Didn't we already kind of/sort of see this with Grave Encounters earlier in the year? »

By this time next week the 2011 New York Comic Con will be wrapping up for another year, but let's not get too far ahead of ourselves -- there are panels to see and toys to buy first! Here's a look at the horror highlights along with a few other genre-related appearances that should be of interest to our readers.
Thursday, October 13th, is void of horror (might be a good shopping day) so this list just covers the 14th-16th. It is, of course, subject to change so if you're going, keep your eyes on the official New York Comic Con website.

The found footage horror film Grave Encounters is by no means the first of its genre nor is it likely to be the last, but it is the first take inspiration from the current crop of Ghost Hunters-style shows that have proliferated on basic cable over the last couple of years. The feature writing and directorial debut by the Vicious Brothers (real names Colin Minihan and Stuart Ortiz) which debuted in limited release in New York and L.A. last week, and is going wider this week, Grave Encounter purports to be the first and only episode of the titular show, whose crew and host disappeared inside of a mental hospital with a history of abuse and later strange events. Atypical of the shows from which »

*this title is scheduled to arrive on VOD / iTunes on Aug 25, 2011 and will be released on DVD, October 18, 2011.
The paranormal reality television genre has finally reached a point in where it can be grimly parodied. In the heights that this medium has reached, it is about time that these ghost hunters are getting a stab of the thorn. Grave Encounters gives a fictional group of ghost adventurers, lead by Lance Preston (Sean Rogerson), their just deserts. It is not wise to go adventuring into territory in where they will not be welcomed.
When they investigate Collingwood Psychiatric Hospital, the fate that Preston and his team end up in can best be described as taking the Kobayashi Maru test from “Star Trek II: Wrath of Kahn.” What they encounter tests both their character and resilience in a situation »
