"Well… let me tell you guys, it was magical and sweet." "We were at home, romantic and relaxed, which is perfectly very 'us.' We stood on the deck, »

Julianne Hough Shows Off Her Massive Engagement Ring for First Time -- He Did Goooood!

27 August 2015 7:00 AM, PDT | TooFab | See recent TooFab news »

What a rock! Newly-engaged "Dancing with the Stars" alum Julianne Hough went public with her engagement ring on Wednesday night, giving us our best glimpse at the giant sparkler since boyfriend Brooke Laich popped the question last week. While the dancer did her best to avoid showing off her new accessory by covering it with her other hand or keeping it in her pockets around photographers at last night's Taylor Swift show, one of her friends blew her cover with the photo above. Hough's hairstylist Riawna Capri shared a group shot from the gang's Uber ride to the Staples Center, where Julianne's ring is right up front. Sure, it's a little blurry -- but it gives us a much better idea of the size of the rock, and man is it impressive. Laich reportedly proposed with a 5-plus-carat Lorraine Schwartz diamond ring. Baby Boom: Swanberg’s Pregnancy Drama Plays it Safe

For a glaring portrait of the subtle audacity of subconscious privilege unawares, look no further than Kris Swanberg’s latest feature, Unexpected, an indie Sundance premiered drama treading the expected tropes of unplanned pregnancy. Its set-up initially poses a provocative juxtaposition, a tale of two surprise pregnancies dealt to two very different women in one of the Midwest’s most progressive cities, Chicago. Told from the perspective of its white, high functioning and hopelessly granola lead, whose life intersects with a black, socioeconomically compromised student in a similar situation promises to be an invigorating examination of taken-for-grantedness. Except, at every possible opportunity, Swanberg’s screenplay (co-written by actress Megan Mercier) backs away from controversial points, instead reinforcing the frustrating obliviousness of its lead character. And that’s not even addressing the narrative’s conservative reinforcement of teen mothers giving birth »

The Longest Ride movie review: romantic bargaining

20 July 2015 1:20 PM, PDT | | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

For once, a movie based on a Nicholas Sparks book appears to be populated by relatively realistic approximations of human beings dealing with relationship conflict in realistic ways. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

I’m “biast” (con): not a fan of Nicholas Sparks

I have not read the source material

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

I think this might be the first movie based on a Nicholas Sparks novel that I haven’t hated. Oh, sure, it’s set in an American South — specifically, North Carolina — where there are, impossibly, no black people (see also: Safe Haven), and where it only ever rains as an expression of manly sadness that cannot be articulated in any other way. It uses a motif similar to The Notebook’s, in which romantic handwritten documents of a relationship — in this case, love letters — allow for flashbacks to the 1940s, »

The Longest Ride review

21 June 2015 10:13 PM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Britt Robertson and Scott Eastwood star in the latest Nicholas Sparks adaptation to make it to film. Here's our The Longest Ride review.

There are variables in the chemistry of a Nicholas Sparks film, but the basic formula has seldom changed through films like The Notebook, Dear John and The Lucky One. Even the posters for these movies often look indistinguishable from one another, except for the two actors pictured. The Longest Ride is the tenth Sparks adaptation to hit the big screen and though it sticks to what you'll know if you've seen more than one of the others, it's not necessarily a formula that's in need of fixing.

Stop us if this sounds like we've done a find and replace on some other plot summary, but this time we follow Sophia, (Britt Robertson) who's about to start a prestigious internship at a gallery in New York, just as »

Relativity Media Gets Extension for Loan Payments Due at End of May (Exclusive)

1 June 2015 12:41 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

A group of unnamed lenders behind Relativity Media has agreed to extend a May 31 deadline to allow the Hollywood mini-studio to postpone a critical debt payment, the company said Monday.

The agreement comes after long-simmering reports of financial strains at the company burst into public view late last month, when Relativity accused one of its financial backers of unfairly criticizing its economic stability.

The agreement with its lenders gives Relativity an unspecified amount of time to make the payment that was due at the end of May. The film company had previously said that a new financial arrangements had already been made and that the deadline was not of concern. But “the complexity of the transaction required additional time for us to close it, which this agreement provides,” said a source close to the company.

“Today the company and its lenders have entered into a formal agreement that allows Relativity »

Relativity Media Financing Triggers Public Dispute With Investor

22 May 2015 6:24 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Long-simmering reports of financial strains at Relativity Media broke into the open Friday when the company accused one of its backers of privately badmouthing its economic condition in an attempt to take control of the mini-studio.

Relativity said in a statement that New York-based Colbeck Capital had engaged in a “play…to try to seize control of Relativity by trying to spread false rumors about the state of the company.” Relativity chief executive Ryan Kavanaugh remains “fully in control,” the statement said.

The film and television company also said that Colbeck’s two members on the Relativity board “will be removed from the board next week.”

The New York Post reported early Friday that Kavanaugh needed to raise $200 million by the end of the month and risked losing control of his company. Relativity denied that, issuing a statement that said: “Under Ryan Kavanaugh’s leadership, Relativity has successfully recapitalized its »
