Gael García Bernal (l.) and Diego Luna hit the road in Y tu mamá también.

The smash 2001 road comedy Y tu mamá también from the Oscar-winning director Alfonso Cuarón (Gravity) is that rare movie to combine raunchy subject matter and emotional warmth.

Gael García Bernal (Casa de mi Padre) and Diego Luna (Contraband) shot to international stardom as a pair of horny Mexico City teenagers from different classes who, after their girlfriends jet off to Italy for the summer, are bewitched by a gorgeous older Spanish woman (Tetro’s Maribel Verdú) they meet at a wedding. When she agrees to accompany them on a trip to a faraway beach, the three form an increasingly intense and sensual alliance that ultimately strips them both physically and emotionally bare.

Shot with elegance and dexterity by the great Emmanuel Lubezki (The Tree of Life »

Production Shingle Gary Sanchez Gets Sister Label, Gloria Sanchez, For Female-Centric Fare

12 February 2014 8:26 AM, PST | Deadline New York | See recent Deadline New York news »

Breaking: Gary Sanchez Productions, the film and television production company founded by Will Ferrell, Adam McKay, and Chris Henchy, has hatched a sister label. Gloria Sanchez Productions will generate female-driven film and TV projects. Longtime Gary Sanchez exec Jessica Elbaum will head the label and will court female voices for its projects. “When Jessica came to us with this idea, we thought it was fantastic,” said McKay and Ferrell. “She has worked with some of the great female voices in comedy and has proven herself as a gifted producer who has a keen eye for material. Elbaum has been with Gary Sanchez since its formation in 2006 and she has been a producer on such films as Step Brothers, The Other Guys, Casa De Mi Padre and Bachelorette, the latter of which fits the template for the kind of fare Gloria Sanchez wants to make. She also guided Ferrell’s 2008 stage show You’re Welcome America, »

Miniseries Spoof 'The Spoils of Babylon' Is An Affectionate Ode to '70s Bloat From IFC and Funny or Die

7 January 2014 9:51 AM, PST | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Matt Piedmont and Andrew Steele have an impressive and possibly doomed dedication to making detailed send-ups of genres with which their audience is almost certainly unfamiliar. Their 2012 movie "Casa de mi Padre," which Piedmont directed and Steele wrote, featured a Spanish-speaking Will Ferrell in a deadpan homage to telenovelas and Spaghetti westerns, complete with loving recreations of shoddy production values. Their new project "The Spoils of Babylon," which premieres on IFC this Thursday, January 9th at 10pm and, like "Casa de mi Padre" is produced by Funny or Die, is a spoof of '70s and '80s event miniseries, with some nods toward the more bloated, bombastic side of filmmaking from the era. "The Spoils of Babylon" is a miniseries itself, made up of six half-hour installments supposedly cut down from an original 22-hour run -- or so Eric Jonrosh tells us. Played by Ferrell, who alongside Adam McKay »

You know who Adrian Martinez is, right? Well, maybe you say you don’t, but odds are, you do. The guy may not be a headliner (yet), but it’s highly likely that you can recall his memorable performances in movies and TV shows like “Sex and the City,” “It’s Kind of a Funny Story,” “Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close,” “A Gifted Man,” “Casa de mi Padre” and loads more. Martinez’s most recent credit comes from Ben Stiller’s “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” in which he plays Walter Mitty’s #2, the guy just under the negative assets manager at Life magazine. Twelve Very Promising New TV Shows To Watch In 2014 (Part Two)

6. The Spoils of Babylon

The Spoils of Babylon is an upcoming American comedy miniseries by Saturday Night Live veterans Andrew Steele and Matt Piedmont, directed by Piedmont (Casa de Mi Padre), and starring Tobey Maguire, Kristen Wiig, Tim Robbins, Jessica Alba, Val Kilmer, Haley Joel Osment, Michael Sheen, and Will Ferrell. It’s doubtful that any other sitcom on the small screen will be able to rival the star-power of this IFC mock-miniseries. The show is intended to be a spoof of the epic-scale TV events prevalent on American network television in the 1970s and 80s such as The Thorn Birds and Rich Man, Poor Man. Spoils of Babylon comes from the Funny or Die production house, and premieres at 10 p.m. Et Jan. 9 on IFC.
