Lily James Swaps Frocks For Felons In Edgar Wright’s ‘Baby Driver’

7 May 2015 11:30 PM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Having impressed audiences with her title turn in Kenneth Branagh’s Cinderella, Lily James is getting some grit under her nails for her next role.

Baby Driver – directed by Ant-man evacuee Edgar Wright – sees Ansel Elgort up to his neck in trouble when he’s forced to work as a getaway driver for an underworld nasty. James is reportedly playing the woman he loves, who inevitably gets caught up in the rubber-burning mayhem.

Though she’s known for period fare like Downton Abbey, James has taken contemporary roles, most notably in sports feature Fast Girls. Wright’s latest should find her consolidating her rising star status and proving she can do more than waft about in impossibly tiny corsets. However before she does so, she’ll be appearing in Pride & Prejudice & Zombies.

Produced by Working Title and Big Talk in association with TriStar, Baby Driver marks something of a departure for the helmer, »

Monsters: Dark Continent movie review: war movie is hell

22 April 2015 7:59 AM, PDT | | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

Suffers from a terrible case of cinematic aphasia. Clearly thinks it’s saying something important and deep, but makes no damn sense at all. I’m “biast” (pro): loved the first movie

I’m “biast” (con): nothing

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

Congratulations to Monsters: Dark Continent for making history with perhaps the worst case ever of cinematic aphasia. This is a film that clearly thinks it’s saying something important and deep, but it makes no damn sense at all. The scenes and the dialogue and the plot and the subtext (which bits I can guess at): none of them connect up in any meaningful way, not on a small scale and not in the big picture. None of it communicates anything other than the fact that director and cowriter (with Jay Basu: Fast Girls) Tom Green (British TV director, not »

'Metal Gear Solid' Movie Brings in 'Monsters 2' Writer

30 March 2015 7:25 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

British screenwriter Jay Basu has signed on to write the screenplay for Sony Pictures' video game adaptation Metal Gear Solid. We reported back in June that filmmaker Jordan Vogt-Roberts (The Kings of Summer) has come aboard to direct, but that was the last we heard about the project. The studio's production president Michael De Luca is overseeing the adaptation.

The original video game, created by Hideo Kojima, launched in 1998 for the original Playstation console. The game follows a solider known as Solid Snake, who breaks into a nuclear weapons compound to stop a terrorist threat by a rogue special forces unit known as Foxhound. Solid Snake's mission is to rescue two hostages, the head of the Defense Advanced Research Projects (Darpa) and president of a major arms manufacturer, while stopping the terrorists from launching nuclear weapons. There have been 10 games that have spawned from the original Metal Gear Solid.

Cinderella movie review: fifty shades of ash

9 March 2015 5:37 AM, PDT | | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

A product of the Disney princess machine. Its highest ambition is to move a new line of toys. Or to evoke despair in the fairy-tale-ization of girls’ lives. I’m “biast” (pro): I’ve enjoyed director Kenneth Branagh’s movies

I’m “biast” (con): I’m so done with princess crap

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

This is how it begins, the fairy-tale-ization of little girls’ lives. Make sure to get ’em while they’re young, and tell ’em: You don’t need any discernible personality or interest in the world to be successful as a lady. Just “be kind,” even to the point of being a doormat; for god’s sake, don’t make waves or complain, just endure whatever abuse the world throws at you even if you could easily walk away from it. As a reward, eventually, luck and magic will »
