In the opening scene, Gaby goes to chat with Lee about his adopted daughter, Jenny, practicing her violin, which he says he has to force her to do. Gaby offers unsolicited advice about not forcing her to do it. Lee says he's not forcing her, she wants to do it. Gaby disagrees. Lee wonders what it is that Gaby's overweight and spoiled eldest daughter, Juanita, is pursuing on her own. It seems that there's a school talent show coming up. Gaby's at a loss but she bets Lee that Juanita will do something great. She goes home and asks what she's going to do and Juanita is all prepared: she's going to do arm farts.
Meanwhile, Beth returns to Paul's house and tries to pretend that she's just back from the grocery store. He points out that he kicked her out the night before. She says every couple has their fights. Paul says it wasn't a fight, it was the end. Beth assures him they'll get past it. Paul asks out-loud if she's out of her mind or it it's another ploy of her mother's to harm or kill him. Beth tells Paul that it's her mother he should be mad at it, and that she truly fell in love with him and she knows now that he didn't kill Martha Hubbard for it was all a lie. Paul says it wasn't a lie. Beth finally realizes that Paul really did kill Martha Hubbard. Paul points out that Martha had it coming for she was a horrible person for the things she did (including driving Mary Alice to suicide) and he cruely asks Beth at what it feels like to be betrayed. Now that she's been betrayed, she knows how painful it is.
Gaby goes through Juanita's closet to look for things she can do. The closet is a graveyard of her abandoned ambitions: guitar, tennis. Gaby says she can't do arm farts in the talent show and she's going to pick something: tap dancing. Something Juanita actually did for two months. Juanita says it's too hard. Gaby says "tough, life is hard". Juanita offers to tell jokes instead. Gaby puts the kibosh on this as she starts telling a racist joke.
Bree meets with her pastor for tea and scones. He wonders what's up since her tasty treats usually mean she's done something bad. She says she's feeling like Job lately: lost her business, her estranged children never call, her boyfriend just left her. He says he understands and that looking at what has been taken from us is a bad way to go through life and looking at what we can do for others is a better way.
Meanwhile, Renee is busy not helping Lynette clean out Porter and Preston's room following their move out. Renee is grossed out by the boy smell but Lynette sort of loves it, she says since Renee doesn't have kids she doesn't understand. Renee says she must be sad for the twins to have moved out. Lynette says it's actually wonderful, it's good they're moving on. Renee wonders why she's crying then. Lynette says it must be the smell and they depart.
At the hospital, Susan and Mike meet with her doctor. It turns out that she's in trouble, the dialysis isn't working and she needs a transplant pronto, and if there's anything she's thinking about doing she should do them now. Translation: you're going to die.... soon. As they leave, Susan says she wants to have a picnic in the woods where they got married for their anniversary. Even though the anniversary isn't until July she wants to do it now. This makes Mike sad.
A little later, Susan tells the girls about the prognosis. Lynette, Bree, Gaby, and Renee tell her to widen her search, ask friends and neighbors. They offer to help. She says it's a vital organ and it's unlikely she will find a kidney doner soon. Bree says people care about her and she might be surprised what people would be willing to do. Susan says she can't ask anyone to make that kind of sacrifice. When Susan leaves the room, Bree says she can ask people if Susan won't. Bree goes to door to door in the neighborhood, but is turned down by Karen McCluskey, Lee, and more.
Renee visits Lynette and says she wants a baby, of her own. A boy. Lynette wonders where this came from. Renee says from Lynette of course, saying kids giving her life meaning. She's already made an appointment with an adoption agency. Lynette tries to persuade her against the idea, talking about sacrifice. Renee says Lynette makes it harder than it has to be. She would work the baby into her schedule not the other way around. Lynette offers to give her a test drive with Paige. Renee accepts and says she's going to be a natural.
Mike and Susan head off for their picnic loaded down with goodies. She thanks him for doing this today. He says she can thank him again when they do it again in July. She asks him to not talk kidneys or illness today but instead focus on having a fun normal day. He says she's got it, and then proceeds to leave the picnic basket on top of the car where it falls off as they drive away.
Meanwhile, Juanita returns home angered by how hard tap class is and wants to quit. Gaby says she can't. Juanita says Gaby quits all the time. Gaby asks if she's getting better, Juanita says she is but says she can't wait til this is over. Carlos wonders why Gaby is working her so hard. She says Bob and Lee are working Jenny hard and he realizes it's a competition. Gaby demurs that it's about Juanita sticking with something but if the side effect is Bob and Lee feeling bad, that's cool too.
Mike and Susan arrive at the woods and he's bummed about the picnic basket. She tells him to forget it. Then he freaks when their take-out is missing their fries. She tells him to think back eight years ago to when they pledged their love to each other. She says they should renew their vows. He loves this idea but as he tries to do it, a bird keeps cawing. He gets mad and starts throwing rock at it. He kills a bird, but it's not the one that was cawing.
Bree hosts a brunch for the neighbors. They wonder what she's up to. She brings in the transplant coordinator from Fairview hospital to explain away myths about kidney transplant surgery. She's also brought in a nurse to test everyone at the party.
Beth goes to visit her demented mother in prison and explains that Paul threw her out because he found out about her. Felicia points out with the "I told you so" line that she warned Beth that Paul was crazy. Beth promises to make it up to her. Felicia says she can never let Beth back into her life since she's been nothing but a disappointment to her. Beth says that she got Paul to confess though to being Martha's killer. Felicia points out that unless she got it on tape, it doesn't matter and is just further proof of Beth's incompetence. Beth asks for another chance to get Paul to confess, but Felicia says she has no more use for her. Beth says she has nowhere to go and wonders what's going to happen to her. Felicia says she's going to live a long, lonely life in her old ratty apartment with plenty of time to think about the people she's disappointed. Felicia tells the guard to take Beth off the visitors list.
The night of the talent show has arrived. Lee and Gaby have a little pre-show showdown. Then Gaby sees Juanita practicing her tap dance and is aghast at her routine. Juanita however thinks she's nailing it. Gaby then kicks her tap shoes under the radiator so Juanita can't find them. Juanita is upset since she worked so hard and yet Gaby doesn't seem to care.
Mike and Susan are getting busy in the woods just as a group of Civil War re-enactors come barreling by, fighting with one another. One is taking it very seriously, one tries to be nice and explains that they have the park until 6 p.m., they have a permit and everything. Susan is willing to let it slide but Mike is angry.
At the talent show, a boy plays water glasses. The finale comes from Jenny, Bob and Lee's daughter with playing her violin. She's pretty good but then she goofs up and continues goofing. Gaby, incredibly uncharitably, laughs and seems satisfied. She figures Lee must be embarrassed. But Lee runs onstage with roses and Bob points out that she always stumbles over that part and she really stumbled today but they couldn't be prouder. Gaby, becoming human again, runs off to get Juanita's tap shoes and Juanita does her routine. It's fine and Gaby stands and shouts "bravo!"
As Mike and Susan leave the park, she tries to put a positive spin on the funny story they have to tell people and then Mike's car won't start. He is not happy.
The transplant coordinator calls Bree and says they've found two matches, one of whom is her. The other match is Beth Young, but the hospital is having a hard time tracking her down. The coordinator asks if they should keep looking for Beth or will Bree be the donor?
Meanwhile, Tom and Lynette are out to dinner and she figures they better order quick since Renee will be calling any minute. Tom says Renee might surprise her. They hear a baby crying and can't believe it, it's Renee out with Paige at the same restaurant on a date with some guy. They watch as she hands off the baby to a stranger whom is a waitress. Tom says Renee really is bad at this. Lynette goes over to the stranger to ask why Renee gave her the baby. The waitress says Renee gave her $100 to see if she could calm the baby down. Lynette offers her $200 to fake out Renee and tell her she gave it to a baby. Renee freaks out running around screaming if anyone has seen a baby. Then Renee runs into Lynette. Renee says it was the only night this guy was in town and she wanted to go on a date with him. Lynette points out that this is what being a mother is about, making sacrifices... which Renee does not seem to comprehend.
Bree goes to visit Beth at her old apartment. Bree apologizes about what happened with Paul and she further explains about Susan. Bree says she's going to be the donor but she wanted to thank Beth for agreeing to be tested and she apologizes to Beth for not treating her right when she moved onto the lane. Beth says she wants to do it, she wants to help Susan and it would mean a lot to her. Bree explains she's been going through a dark time and for her to be able to do this for Susan might mean a lot to Beth but it means everything to Bree. Beth smiles a tearful smile.
The next day, Renee goes to apologize to Lynette and offers up an inappropriate gift for the baby. Renee admits to not being cut out to be a mom. Lynette says that parenthood is not for everyone. Renee wonders what she will do to fill up the hole in her life. Lynette says she'll find something and when she does she'll be glad she has room in her life for it.
Mike and Susan are walking out of the woods and Mike hurts his foot and he gets even angrier. Susan asks if he's okay. He says he's not, they never should've come here and should've waited for their anniversary. She wonders if this is why he is mad and yelling at her. "Nope", he yells he is mad because she's dying and there's nothing he can do about it. Mike sees it as just the final chapter of Susan's bad-luck prone life. Mike says it feels like she's bailing. Susan says she's fighting her ass off, she wants to see MJ graduate and to grow old with Mike, but in the meantime she wants to enjoy every moment of every day. They kiss and hobble out of the woods.
Gaby watches as Juanita dances.
Renee and Lynette watch Tom play with Paige.
Bree reads her Bible.
Beth walks into Fairview hospital and says she's there to donate a kidney. The woman at the desk at the ER says she's at the wrong place, that she wants the transplant office on the fourth floor. Beth continues calmly, showing the woman her paperwork, saying her friend's name is Susan Delfino and tells the nurse that it's funny because at first they didn't get along well but that seems insignificant now that Susan is in need. The nurse again tells Beth that she needs to go to the fourth floor. Beth firmly tells the nurse that the forms have to get to the right place because this is the most important thing she's ever done. The nurse says "okay" and takes the papers and turns away for a minute. Suddenly, Beth pulls out her gun and shoots herself in the head.
