Trond Espen Seim resolutely tries to clear a young man of a murder charge
Beautiful Norwegian scenery enhances this Varg Veum entry from 2011 "Dødens drabanter". The Varg Veum television stories are competent and smoothly done detective mysteries with Trond Espen Seim playing the private eye (on the scraggly side) and Bjørn Floberg as the resident police detective who spars with Seim and reluctantly cooperates with him. In this one Floberg at one point lets a SWAT team wrestle Seim to the ground and handcuff him for minor resistance to police, while another time letting Seim get away with a vicious assault on a lawyer who is an underworld type with drug connections. This variety and their interplay add interest to the stories. Seim has attractive girl friends, now and in the past, and that helps too.
Floberg thinks that a case of two murders is completely wrapped up. There is even a confession from the unstable young man (Sturla Alvsvåg) accused. Seim knows this fellow because he was the child welfare case worker years ago who took him away from his heroin-using mother. What we see of Norway looks very clean, green, mountainous and laced with beautiful fjords. Beneath the surface are social problems, like drugs. A stash of concentrated GBH (gamma hydroxybutyrate) (club drug) is the focal point here. It's valuable because of demand for it, but overdose deaths are reported all the time.
This is a well-plotted and well-paced story. It moves right along and never fails to hold one's interest. Soap opera elements are not allowed to dull the edge or overwhelm the more dark elements. The side characters add a lot of interest and these are well-played by the cast. This is good detective story entertainment. It's on the pat side. We know that Seim is going to get his quarry and survive his encounters. Seim's Veum is an engaging character. He's serious but yet seems to have a twinkle in his eye. He's persistent and clever, someone we want on our side.
