Blink was named by Cantu's close friend, Nick Kramer. Kramer makes three appearances in the film: as the superhero, The Nudist; as one of the Street Thugs taking hostages; and lastly, as one of the SWAT members in the warehouse.
Actor Jason Lee Boyson originally proposed doing a Clint Eastwood-esque voice for Dr. Mystico. However, during rehearsals, Cantu suggested a muddled Eastern European accent, which stuck throughout the shoot.
The original ending for the short film had Average Joe risking his life to save his family and was more serious in tone. However, after consulting with actor Paul Scofield, a decidedly more comedic tone was agreed on.
The opening kitchen scene was originally cut to 5 1/2 minutes, with a good deal of improvisation. After screening a first cut for fellow San Antonio filmmakers, Mark Cantu was given the advice to cut the scene down and open with a more explosive setting. Subsequently, the opening scene became the standoff at the warehouse and the kitchen scene was cut virtually in half.
