Cartoon Movie Unveils Tributes

French animated hit ”Minuscule: Valley of the Lost Ants” has earned its helmer duo, Helene Giraud and Thomas Szabo, and distributor, Le Pacte, two tributes at Cartoon Movie, the Lyon-based co-production forum dedicated to toons.

Voted on by Cartoon Movie’s 750 attending industryites, the European Director of the Year trophy went to Giraud and Szabo, who last teamed on the insect-centric “Minuscule,” while the Distributor nod went to Jean Labadie’s Paris-based Le Pacte, which released the kidpic on Jan. 29.

The humor-filled, dialogue-free “Minuscule” – based on a popular TV series — was produced on a $13.8 million budget and has grossed an estimated €7.7 million ($10.9 million) through March 4 in France.

The European Producer of the Year Award went to Anton Roebben and Eric Goossens’s leading Belgian production outfit Walking The Dog, whose co-production credits range from EuropaCorp’s Berlin-preeming “Jack and the Cuckoo-Clock Heart” to Enzo d’Alo’s “Pinocchio.”

European Film Awards Selects Toon Shortlist

Madrid, Spain — Ari Folman’s “The Congress,” Alain Ughetto’s “Jasmine” and Enzo d’Alo’s “Pinocchio” have been nommed in the European animated pic category of the European Film Awards, which will be handed out at a ceremony in Berlin on Dec. 7.

The three films will be submitted to the 2,900 members of the European Film Academy to vote for the winner, which will be announced, along with the other kudos, at the European Film Awards ceremony in Berlin on Dec. 7.

The shortlist was selected by a committee that consisted of two European Film Academy board members — producer Bruno Chatelin from French and producer Marek Rozenbaum from Israel — as well as three reps of Cartoon, the European association of animation film — Spanish producer Manuel Cristobal, and two journalists, Daniel Couvreur from Belgium and Lisa Nesselson, who is based in France.
