Storyline

Dusty Crophopper is a little cropduster plane with a fear of heights and a crazy dream of being a racer. While his friends need convincing, Dusty gets the training he needs from Skipper, a veteran fighter, and qualifies for the Wings Across the World race. In the event, Dusty finds competitors who soon learn that there is something special about this underdog as he is tested to his physical and emotional limits. In doing so, Dusty soon finds enemies, and more importantly friends, who are inspired by his dream. In the face of all obstacles, the winner of this air race will be anyone's guess. Trivia

Dusty appears to be based on an Air Tractor AT-402 powered by a Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-15AG at 680 horsepower. 2013 marks the 50th anniversary of the PT6A engine and the 3000th Air Tractor aircraft delivery. See more »

Goofs

In all shots of Skipper's tail from the side, the primary color pattern is red and white squares except when the tail is chewed up in the desert/canyon sequence. The color pattern here is entirely black or dark gray and white. In New York, the primary pattern is again red and white. See more »

Quotes

[Ishani gives her new propeller to Dusty]
Dusty Crophopper: That's your propeller. You can still win the race.
Dusty Crophopper: Oh, I intend to. But with my old propeller. This one didn't really suit me, but I think you might find a better use for it.

Just a shameful way for Disney to sell more toys and kids' clothes!
13 November 2013 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

'PLANES': Two Stars (Out of Five)

Spin-off of Pixar's 'CARS' films produced by DisneyToon Studios (without Pixar's involvement). It's the first of a 'PLANES' trilogy and follows the adventures of a cropduster plane who follows his dreams of becoming a racer and competes in the 'Wings Across the World' race (despite his fear of heights). The film was executive produced and co-written (with Klay Hall and Jeffrey M. Howard) by John Lasseter (who directed the 'CARS' films and is Pixar's chief creative officer). Hall also directed the film (his previous directing experience is in TV animation mostly). The movie was originally intended as a direct-to-video release (like most DisneyToon films) but Disney was so impressed with the end results that they decided to release it theatrically instead. It plays more like a direct-to-video movie (or even an animated TV release).

Dane Cook stars as the voice of Dusty Crophopper, a cropduster plane who's afraid of heights but has always dreamed of being a race plane. Brad Garrett and Terri Hatcher voice his buddies, Chug (a fuel truck) and Dottie (a forklift mechanic), who help him on his adventure. Stacy Keach plays the voice of an old navy war plane, named Skipper Riley, who teaches Dusty how to race. Roger Craig Smith plays the voice of Dusty's rival, Ripslinger, (as well as other voices). Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Priyanka Chopra, John Cleese, Cedric the Entertainer, Sinbad, Val Kilmer, Anthony Edwards and many others also voice characters in the film.

There's pretty much nothing to the movie at all (unlike 'CARS' and other Pixar films). It's just a shameful way for Disney to sell more toys and kids' clothes; so it's no surprise that they're planning to build a trilogy out of the concept. Hopefully the next two installments will go direct-to-video where they belong. I just saw another animated kids' movie (at about the same time) with a similar underdog race story, called 'TURBO', that is so much better made and has a lot more to offer kids and adults alike. You should rent it instead.
