Falling DVD & Blu-ray sales, and an era passing

21 March 2017 2:58 PM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Simon Brew Mar 23, 2017

As DVD and Blu-ray sales fall, it's no longer certain that films will get a disc release. So what's happening?

Let’s start with a statistic.

In 2013, Hotel Transylvania shifted 1,029,614 copies on Blu-ray disc in the Us alone. A hefty number, yet the animated hit – which has thus far spawned one sequel, with another on the way – was only the 23rd best-selling Blu-ray release of the year in America that year, just trailing titles such as Turbo, Rise Of The Guardians, Django Unchained and Life Of Pi.

2013 was arguably the peak year for Blu-ray sales, with 23 individual titles selling a million copies or more in the Us. The best-selling of all, Despicable Me 2, shifted 4.6m copies alone, and many more overseas. On the DVD format, meanwhile, 45 different films sold a million units in America in 2013, including another 2.7m copies of Hotel Transylvania.

The new trailer for Despicable Me 3 goes full on Goldmember

15 March 2017 3:59 AM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Author: Jon Lyus

The earliest signs that Despicable Me 3 was going to continue the slapstick humiliation of the previous films came with the fist teaser trailer. Gru, hoisted by his own leotard is perhaps the perfect summation of where we are with this series.

The first film was a neat subversion of the classic villain trope, Despicable Me 2 continued the evolution with a love interest for Gru, as well as shadows from his past creeping in. Now we have the third film, and it seems as if those elements will resurface as we’ve now got a good idea of what Gru will be up to.

They’re back…

Having a surprised twin brother is a narrative element right out of the Sunset Beach playbook. It gives the lead actor a further reason to come back, and can be used to up the playful aspect of the story. »

Despicable Me 3 Trailer: Gru’s Twin Brother Is A Bad Influence

14 March 2017 8:38 AM, PDT | LRMonline.com | See recent LRM Online news »

Illumination Entertainment seems to be knocking it out of the park as of late. While their films are by no means as beloved as your average Disney/Pixar/DreamsWorks fare, it certainly seems to be scratching a very specific itch for audiences in terms of its comedy style. Last year, we saw the studio release two films: The Secret Life of Pets and Sing, both of which did very well at the box office, more than making up for their budgets.

The year before that, they released Minions, the spinoff of the Despicable Me franchise. While the movie made huge money — over $1.1 billion worldwide — it was a creative step down for the franchise, and proof that not every side character needs their own movie, no matter how entertaining they are.

This year, Illumination will be heading back to Gru (Steve Carell) and the girls with Despicable Me 3. This flick »

New Despicable Me 3 Footage Introduces Gru's Twin Brother Dru

13 March 2017 2:05 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

When the first Despicable Me 3 teaser debuted in December, it gave us our first look at the new villain Balthazar Bratt (Trey Parker), whom Gru (Steve Carell) and Lucy (Kristen Wiig) have to face off against. Today, we have a preview for the full-length trailer, which features quite the surprising revelation. That Gru actually has a twin brother named Dru. This brief scene features Gru flying to an island, where he discovers that Dru has done quite well for himself, living in a massive mansion.

This trailer preview surfaced on YouTube earlier today, revealing that the second trailer debuts online tomorrow, Tuesday, March 14. It seems likely that we'll get our first full look at Dru in the sneak preview. This new character will also be voiced by Steve Carell. It still isn't clear how Dru fits into the story at this point, or how Dru managed to track down »

The Golden Globe Awards are known as Hollywood's biggest party.

While it is of course an honour to win a Golden Globe, they have very little impact on the Oscars, and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association who votes on the awards are often known to make some interesting decisions when giving out their trophies. It's also a total Hollywood love-fest, where stars of TV and movies are getting drunk and hanging out, and we wish more than anything that we could be there. But since our invite was lost in the mail, we could at least watch from afar and enjoy everything that makes this an unforgettable night! We're breaking down the highlights and surprises from the event--from the actual awards, to the ceremony itself.

Pharrell Williams Makes His Mark in Film Producing With ‘Hidden Figures’

3 January 2017 12:59 PM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Seeing the word “producer” attached to Pharrell Williams’ name is nothing new. As half of the Neptunes and later as a solo artist, the Virginian has put his stamp on more hit songs than almost anyone this millennium. But with the 2016 release of “Hidden Figures,” Variety’s Creative Impact in Producing honoree became one of a different type.

Though he’d been credited as an executive producer on 2015’s Sundance hit, “Dope,” “Hidden Figures” marks Williams’ first venture as a proper film producer. He came onboard the project, which stars Octavia Spencer, Janelle Monae and Taraji P. Henson as the real-life African-American women who played key roles at Nasa in the run-up to John Glenn’s famous 1962 voyage, back in April with his producing partner Mimi Valdes. At the time, he noted that the Theodore Melfi-directed film was “an extraordinary story about black women with genius mathematical minds who contributed to American history. »
