In the comedy adventure sequel Despicable Me 2 opening July 3rd, Miranda Cosgrove reprises the role of Margo, the eldest of the three orphans adopted by Gru (Steve Carell), the world’s greatest super-villain, who has given up his despicable ways and is on a quest to become the perfect dad. Cosgrove brings a sense of personality and edge to her delightful character that’s now a little older. She remains the backbone of the family, looking out for her sisters and keeping the family together, but she’s also growing up, is preoccupied with texting, and is starting to notice boys her age, which drives Gru crazy. At the film’s recent press day, Cosgrove talked about what it was like returning to work in the world of animation and voicing her character again, how she feels now that her iCarly series has ended, why she enjoys hanging out »

Steve Carell and Kristen Wiig have great comedic chemistry, and audiences are going to get a double dose of the duo this year as they team up for "Despicable Me 2," opening Wednesday, July 3, and the highly anticipated "Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues," which hits theaters this December.
Moviefone caught up with Hollywood's new comedy "it" couple (too soon?) to talk about "Despicable Me 2," their roles in the "ridiculous" "Anchorman 2," Wiig's "absurd" new miniseries, and the possibility of combining forces with the "Fast & Furious" franchise for "Despicable Me 17."
What is the hot mess that is Gru?
Steve Carell: What is he? Who is he? He is an ex-supervillian. I think the tagline for the first one was "super-bad to super-dad" or something along those lines. That is all he cares about, but he is trying to maintain his dignity as a former villain and so he »

Steve Carell is funny as ever but Despicable Me 2 loses its risk-taking spark Everything you loved about the clever and colorful 3D CGI cartoon movie Despicable Me featuring the voice of Steve Carell as pointy-nosed super villain Gru is back in the sequel Despicable Me 2. It’s just a little less colorful, not nearly as clever and lacking the bold irreverence of the first installment. A lot of the warm, fuzzy, ho-hum attitude revolves around Gru, his adopted daughters Margo (Miranda Cosgrove), Edith (Dana Gaier) and Agnes (Elsie Fisher) and his new roles as single dad and reformed arch villain »

Monsters University continued to entice families into theaters, Sandra Bullock & Melissa McCarthy drove a buddy comedy to better than expected box office results, and White House Down failed to pull eyeballs away from World War Z over the June 28-30, 2013 box office weekend. Monsters University retained its hold on the top spot for the second weekend, although it's doubtful the Pixar prequel will three-peat in the top position. Next week it will face fierce competition in the animated family-friendly market from Despicable Me 2 while Disney will also present Pixar with a major challenge when it unleashes The Lone Ranger on July 3, 2013.
Meanwhile, Man of Steel spent the weekend crossing over the $500 million mark worldwide. The new Superman movie starring Henry Cavill in the lead role officially crossed the $500 million milestone on Saturday, June 29th. Thus far, Man of Steel has made $248.7 million domestically and $271.7 million internationally and has yet »

With a huge UK opening under its belt, is Despicable Me 2 set to be the biggest hit of the summer?
At the start of the summer blockbuster season, all eyes were looking at the likes of Iron Man 3, Star Trek Into Darkness, Man Of Steel and Monster University as the big hits of the season. But it might just be that Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment have the ace up their sleeve. Bluntly, the early signs are that Despicable Me 2, when it opens fully around the globe, is set to be huge.
The film has opened in just seven countries worldwide so far, and already has $50m in the bank off the back of it. In the UK in particular, the film has given Universal, by some distance, its biggest opening weekend of all time over here. Including last weekend's previews, »

“Monsters University” still has its “A” game at the box office.
The animation stayed in first place for the second straight weekend after fending off two newcomers to the box office. The prequel did earned a $46.2 million, a decrease of 44 percent from the previous weekend. In its 10-day total for release, it earned $171 million. But, it may have trouble with another animation out this week with “Despicable Me 2.”
As for Paul Feig’s ‘The Heat,” it started off strong with an estimated $40 million in second place. According to Box Office Mojo, it is Sandra Bullock’s biggest opening more than the “The Blind Side at $34.1 million. It also beat Melissa McCarthy’s biggest opening from “Identity Thief” at $34.6 million. And it did much better than Feig’s previous film “Bridesmaids” at $26.2 million.
Now it looks like ‘White House Down’ has fallen.

Zack Snyder.s reboot of the Superman franchise Man of Steel reigned at the Australian box-office last weekend, raking in $8.8 million plus about $600,000 in previews.
The four-day figure was below the opening weekend of Fast & Furious 6 and slightly below The Hangover Part 111.s debut.. But that was rated as an excellent result by one exhibitor who observed the Superman character isn.t as strongly entrenched in Australian pop culture as it is in the Us.
Given the man of steel.s invasion, zombie thriller World War Z held reasonably well in its second frame, down 48%.
The start of the school vacation ensured great turn-outs for the second weekends of Despicable Me 2 and Monster.s University.
But Blue Sky Studios. Epic, a 3D animated adventure comedy set in a suburban forest voiced by Colin Farrell, Jason Sudeikis, Christoph Waltz and Amanda Seyfried, opened weakly. The distributor will be hoping »

The heat was on in this weekend’s box office, but nothing could top last week’s number 1.
Monsters University repeats at number 1 this weekend with $46 million. Pixar’s latest was the easy favorite to win the weekend, and only dipped 44% from last weekend. Although the film should stay strong through the July 4th holiday, it has some stiff competition on the horizon in the form of Despicable Me 2.
Not far behind at number 2 is The Heat (read our review) with $40 million. The Melissa McCarthy and Sandra Bullock buddy cop comedy did very well thanks, in part, to the Bridesmaids connection. For those that might not know, The Heat reteams Bridesmaids director ...

Los Angeles — Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy brought "The Heat" against Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx at the box office.
The Fox action-comedy starring the funny ladies as mismatched detectives earned $40 million in second place in its opening weekend, topping the $25.7 million debut haul of Sony's "White House Down," according to studio estimates Sunday.
The Disney-Pixar animated prequel "Monsters University" remained box-office valedictorian in its second weekend, earning $46.1 million in first place.
As for "The Heat," employing two female leads to buck the male-dominated buddy-cop formula paid off in ticket sales.
"I think the fact that we have a female-centric movie standing out in a forest of giant tent-pole movies is phenomenal," said Chris Aronson, Fox's president of domestic distribution. "Audiences really responded. We positioned this to be a female event movie, and we got the opening that we were hoping for this weekend."

For the first time in a long time, each of the top five movies out this weekend made over $20 million each, bringing the domestic box office gross to $180 million (albeit down 11 percent from a year ago), according to Deadline. Leading the way was family favorite Monsters University, which topped the box office for the second week in a row, though it's likely to fall when Universal's Despicable Me 2 comes out July 3. In its opening weekend, The Heat and all its threats pulled in a weekend total of $40 million to take second place, hopefully proving to studios once and for all that it's worth it to do more female buddy comedies. Fellow newcomer White House Down raked in $26 million and landed in fourth place. For third place, Brad Pitt’s zombie thriller World War Z continued to beat its bad buzz in its second week out at just under $30 million. »

Proving once again that women do, in fact, like going to the movies, The Heat got off to a very strong start this weekend. The weekend's other new movie, White House Down, failed to differentiate itself from March's Olympus Has Fallen and wound up collapsing under the weight of all of the other appealing options in the market. Still, it was Pixar's Monsters University in first place once again over another busy Summer weekend. The animated prequel dipped 45 percent to $45.6 million for a 10-day total of $170.4 million. That's a slightly better hold than Toy Story 3 (46 percent) or Brave (49 percent), and was way better than Cars 2 (60 percent). If it doesn't get completely obliterated by Despicable Me 2 this week, Monsters University should ultimately be able to get close to $300 million. Playing at 3,181 locations, The Heat took second place with $39.1 million. That's star Sandra Bullock's highest opening ever ahead »

Disney's "Monsters University" added $44.2 million from 37 territories. And Universal's "Despicable Me 2" debuted in the top spot in five markets and brought in $41.5 million. A half hour into “Despicable Me 2,” I had no idea what the story was. I didn’t care very much – directors Pierre Coffin and Chris Renaud obviously knew that regular doses of Minion magic would mollify even the most nettlesome demand for a storyline– but the prospect of having to write a plot summary was making me crazy. You know what? Ultimately, it’s just a love story – which doesn’t separate it all that much from its big-hit predecessor, 2010’s “Despicable Me,” in which the nefarious Gru (short for gruesome? I forget) tried to steal the moon, while three orphan girls stole his heart (sorry, that was weak…). The problem with “DM2,” if it is in fact a problem, is that the character in need of reformation – and ripe for it -- has already been reformed: Gru has remade his arsenal of fearsome weaponry into amusements for his girls, »

The pretty-boy image of Channing Tatum may have gotten its first major box office blemish.
“White House Down,” Sony’s big-budget action film from helmer Roland Emmerich, starring Tatum and Jamie Foxx, failed to excite audiences this weekend, grossing just $25.7 million from 3,222 domestic locations. That’s a troubling start considering the film cost upwards of $150 million (not including worldwide marketing).

But it’s an especially tough pill to swallow for Tatum, who has had a string of recent hits, including “G.I. Joe: Retaliation,” “21 Jump Street,” “The Vow” and “Magic Mike.” In fact, every major studio film that Tatum has toplined since 2011 has gone on to gross more than $100 million at the domestic box office.
It seems “White House Down” may end that streak for the hunky star.

It’s been a great June at the domestic box office — and thanks to a jam-packed slate of robust earners, the month finished strong this weekend. In fact, the top five films all earned over $20 million.
Monsters University stayed on top of the chart with $46.2 million, marking a slim 44 percent drop over the Friday-to-Sunday period, which was lower than the second weekend declines of Brave (49 percent), Cars 2 (60 percent), and Toy Story 3 (46 percent). The well-received family film has earned $171.3 million total after ten days — and it will definitely surpass the original Monsters Inc.’s $251 million cume. The film will »
