Inventing Our Life: The Kibbutz Experiment -- Inventing Our Life: The Kibbutz Experiment is a documentary film examining the 100-year history of Israel’s kibbutz movement, one of the most enduring experiments in radically communal living. Recreating its glorious past and chronicling its recent decline, Inventing Our Life focuses on the heartbreak and hope of the modern kibbutz, as a new generation struggles to insure its survival.
The film's arc traces the heroic role of the kibbutzim in the establishment of the state, its pioneering place in the history of communal living, and, finally, the crisis that has led to a radical transformation of this bold human experiment. Though featuring major historic watersheds in the modern history of the state, Israel’s seismic shift from socialism to capitalism is at the heart of the film.
Can a radically socialist institution survive a new market-driven reality and still maintain its ideological integrity? How will this affect the lives of the tens of thousands of people who still believe in the kibbutz experiment, and who continue to call it home? As the film progresses, the core drama shifts from Can it survive? to Yes, but at what price?
Using rare archival footage and a hip musical score, four to five different kibbutzim are featured, including Sasa, the “first all American kibbutz,” settled in 1949 by ex-WW II GIs. The compelling cast of characters is multi-generational, with younger kibbutzniks often less committed to preserving this sometimes harsh and demanding way of life. Though large numbers of this third generation have defected, many of those who remain or return are committed to its survival and ask, What went wrong? How can kibbutz better serve our country? In this vein, Inventing Our Life includes a look at Israel's new phenomenon of urban kibbutzim, collective in their way of life but generating no common product other than NGOs devoted to tackling pressing social concerns on Israel's new, conceptual frontier.
