'The Year of Spectacular Men': Film Review | Laff 2017

16 June 2017 10:45 PM, PDT | The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News news »

Sisterly chemistry is the natural resource fueling The Year of Spectacular Men, an uneven but sparky comedy showcasing Madelyn Deutch and her real-life sib Zoey, star of such features as Why Him? and Vampire Academy. Revolving around a succession of romantic misadventures, the film was written by Madelyn, whose mostly witty dialogue and assured performance as an aimless college grad updates the archetype of the smart ditz with a modern sexual frankness.

For the twentysomethings with whom the movie is sure to click, the sarcastic jabs at such easy targets as health-conscious New Age types might feel fresh »

Girl in the Spider's Web Targets Claire Foy as Lisbeth Salander

15 May 2017 5:09 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

It seems Sony Pictures may have found their new Lisbeth Salander in The Crown star Claire Foy, despite reports from March that both Scarlet Johansson and Natalie Portman were up for the role. Claire Foy is reportedly in early talks, but she may not be set quite yet. Insiders claim that, while Claire Foy has in fact been offered the role, there are still scheduling issues that need to be worked out before she can sign on.

The Hollywood Reporter reveals that this coveted role went down to both Claire Foy and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story star Felicity Jones. It's possible that Felicity Jones may be offered the role if these scheduling conflicts can't be worked out, but that has yet to be confirmed. Claire Foy has also been fielding interest to star in Universal's biopic First Man, starring Ryan Gosling as American astronaut Neil Armstrong, although it »

Will Fifty Shades Destroy John Wick and Batman at the Box Office?

7 February 2017 9:41 AM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

While February hasn't traditionally been a hotbed for box office blockbusters, that started to change three years ago. Warner Bros.' The Lego Movie became an instant hit in February 2014, opening with $69 million en route to $469.1 million worldwide. In 2015, Fifty Shades of Grey ($85.1 million opening weekend, $571 million worldwide) and Kingsman: The Secret Service ($36.2 million opening weekend, $414.3 million worldwide) went toe-to-toe, and last year, the R-rated Deadpool ($132.4 million debut, $783.1 million worldwide) set box office records. This year, three highly-anticipated movies square off, with The Lego Movie spin-off The Lego Batman movie facing a pair of R-rated sequels, Universal's sexually-charged erotic drama Fifty Shades Darker and Lionsgate's action-packed John Wick: Chapter 2. While all three should have no trouble drumming up business this weekend, we're predicting that The Lego Batman Movie will come away with the easy win, debuting with $58.7 million.

While that tally is a bit less than The Lego Movie »

Sundance Film Review: ‘Before I Fall’

21 January 2017 3:29 PM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

To a film critic, reviewing Ya movies can feel like being forced to relive the horrors of high school over and over again. But to a teenager, that doesn’t sound like such a bad thing, especially when the characters are pretty and potentially more fabulous than you are. That’s basically the appeal of “Before I Fall,” Ry Russo-Young’s impressively stylish adaptation of the popular Lauren Oliver novel, in which the most beautiful girl in school dies unexpectedly, only to reawaken that same morning, blessed/cursed to repeat the day until she gets it right.

Like “Groundhog Day” for audiences too young to get the reference, “Before I Fall” suggests that the decisions we make really matter, though it’s not at all clear about why Sam Kingston (“Vampire Academy” star Zoey Deutch) is caught in an infinite loop, or what she needs to do to break it. »

Zoey Deutch Experiences Groundhog Day In Sundance Trailer For Before I Fall

19 January 2017 7:36 AM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

“Maybe for you there’s a tomorrow – maybe there are 1,000 – but for some of us, there’s only today.” Time travel, and the concept of reliving one defining moment over and over again ad nauseam, is something that’s been a fixture of the film world since Groundhog Day. That’s not to say Harold Ramis’ seminal comedy-drama was the first to dump its protagonist in a mind-bending time loop, but it’s certainly one of the more accomplished examples, and few movies have come close ever since.

And though it’s not strictly speaking apples to apples, Open Road Films and director Ry Russo-Young (Nobody Walks) are prepping Before I Fall for its premiere at this weekend’s Sundance Film Festival. It incorporates many of the same storytelling devices seen in Groundhog Day – the endless time loop, a protagonist in need of a life lesson – but instead favors teen drama over existential angst. »

Edge of Tomorrow, Groundhogs Day, two examples of how living the same day over and over make for a great film. And now we have our first look at a new installment that looks to be a great film.

The Sundance Film Festival is home every year to countless amazing films. It's an event I hope to one day cover. This year is no exception.
