A decent serial killer mystery
25 February 2012 | by (United Kingdom) – See all my reviews

The comments below relate to the first story which consisted of episodes one and two which had been combined to make a feature lengthy story here in the UK.

Having enjoyed Scandinavian murder mysteries such as 'The Killing' and 'Wallander' on BBC4 I was keen to see what ITV3's new Danish series would be like. It started well enough with a police woman, Katrine Ries Jensen, investigating the murder of a woman found buried six years after she disappeared. She is initially taken off the case after discharging her weapon and wounding a suspect who turned out to be uninvolved. Despite this she takes the files to a lecturer, Thomas Schaeffer, who has worked for the police as a profiler before because she is convinced that there is something unusual about her burial. He not only agrees but is convinced that the man has killed again in the intervening years. Searches of the area find another four bodies; each laid out in the same distinctive cross-armed manner. When another girl goes missing they rush to find her and manage to get there in time to free her but the killer ambushes them, knocks Thomas out before forcing Katrine into his underground holding chamber. By the time Thomas comes to he has escaped. His victim is found suffering from severe hypothermia so can't be questioned. The killer bluffs his way into the hospital and is just about to kill her when Katrine enters the room; she demands to know who he is but lets him go after he claims to be the senior consultant. By confronting him she has come to his attention and he is determined that she will be his next victim!

This was a solid enough opening episode even if the story seemed a little cliché… the ending was one of the oldest in the book! That said I still enjoyed it; Laura Sofia Bach was convincing as Katrine and Jakob Cedergren wasn't bad as Thomas. Fans of 'The Killing' will no doubt be pleased to see Lars 'Troels' Mikkelsen who appears as Katrines boss Magnus Bisgaard. Given the subject matter it wasn't too gruesome but there were some tense scenes and anybody with claustrophobia is going to empathise with the victims who are confined in what is little more than a coffin. While not as good as the other series I mentioned this was still good enough to have me looking forward to the next story.
