Storyline

After a college fair at a high school, in Fairfax, Virginia, in the burbs of Washington, DC, a disguised unknown assailant shoves a Navy recruiter, Simon, a petty officer first-class, down a staircase and then crushes his skull; Gibbs and company investigate. Dr. Walter Magnus, Ducky's predecessor, sad and confused, suffering from Alzheimer's disease, visits, and he offers advice. Tony and McGee pursue one unpleasant and unproductive lead, then Tony and Ziva meet one of Simon's friends, who leads the gang to another person, who also proves to be a dead end. Tony and Ziva visit another suspect, who tries to escape. Gibbs and the gang eventually figure it out, confront the killer, and help to recruit a new sailor. Written by DocRushing

Goofs

The recruitment pamphlets the Petty Officer hands to the high school student in the opening scene, as well as those later strewn about in the stairwell, are Marine Corps publications, not Navy. The Marine Corps Emblem, the Eagle, Globe and Anchor, are clearly visible on the front. See more »

Quotes

Dr. Donald Mallard: Your family is your purpose now, Walter. You have a responsibility to those two boys to teach them everything you know.
Doctor Walter Magnus: But damn it, I CAN'T! I mean, don't you see? Before the symptoms started, before the - Hell, alzeheimers diagnosis. I would run cases in my head. Every autopsy, every detail I remembered it all. And now there's NOTHING! That's why I came here. Just one last time. Thinking that maybe it would - it would all come back. Sometimes I can't remember who I was.
Dr. Donald Mallard: Then let me show you.

Of all the episodes this season so far, this has (at the time of writing) the lowest average, 7.6/10 with 88 votes. #8.5 also has 7.6/10 but only 82 votes. And even though #8.6 has 7.4/10, it has it with only 79 votes. There is the rule: the more votes, the more reliable the average (see IMDb Top 250 Minimum Amount of Votes Required principle).

Any way, in Season 8, I've given only one 9 and three 8s, all others have been 7s. This one I have to give a 6/10. It's just so... average. The plot, the dialog, the acting - on an average 13-in-a-dozen TV show this would not stand out, but NCIS has set the bar too high in the past. An episode that's basically "just another day at job" for everyone involved in making it just doesn't cut it.

Maybe the writers had a bad day. There is only so much the director and actors can get out of an nondescript script. This episode is supposed to be emotional but errs on the sentimental side. The laughs are almost non-existent - Tony even runs out of quips! And Ziva's mystery man - don't hold your breath. If you fail to see this episode, you haven't missed anything important.
