- Chuck and Sarah try to combine a romantic French getaway with a mission to find a specialized microchip. Lester asks Big Mike for romantic advice.
- LOIRE VALLEY, FRANCE
A man runs through a vineyard with men and hunting dogs in hot pursuit. He ducks into a chateau, only to not have a way out. He takes out a syringe and is about to inject it into himself. He decides instead to inject it into a bottle of wine. What looks like a nanochip is now safely hidden. He hides the syringe before being shot dead.
BURBANK, CA
Chuck (Zachary Levi) and Sarah (Yvonne Strahovski) are having a romantic dinner. Very romantic, in fact, as Chuck had plans to propose to Sarah. And it was going fine...until Sarah started talking about the story of her parents' proposal at a similar restaurant.
SARAH: I mean, he had the champagne and the flowers and the band and the balloons...it was so chaotic, so over the top.
Thankfully, Chuck didn't have any of that. But Morgan (Joshua Gomez) did...waiting outside for it to be sprung. At least nobody knocked over a candle and set the restaurant ablaze like Sarah's parents. But now Chuck was on damage control and went through hell and high water to get rid of the balloons, the champagne, even the horse-drawn carriage. (The horse was not pleased.) And all of it was irrelevant anyway, since they had a new mission. Beckman (Bonita Friedericy) ordered the team, including Casey (Adam Baldwin), who was caught in traffic by that horse-drawn carriage (told you the horse wasn't pleased), to France to retrieve the nanochip. Chuck and Sarah would pose as a couple at a wine-tasting party, and Casey was Chuck's manservant. (Even Sarah had to laugh.) Morgan proposed a sub-mission to their mission, as they were going to be in such a romantic location. Plus, he had to delegate some of his authority to Big Mike (Mark Christopher Lawrence), as Lester's (Vik Sahay) parents arranged a marriage for him. (They're from Canada; they have those there.) Sarah asked Beckman permission to go after Chuck's mom out of earshot of Chuck and Casey.
They head to the chateau and have to keep an eye out for Pierre Melville, a French terrorist also looking for the chip. The team starts their search. Casey, having been goaded downstairs to the basement doing manservant duties, mainly so Chuck could be alone long enough with Sarah to propose, strikes paydirt and finds the wine cellar where the chip was. So does Melville's men. He gets cornered, but the chip is on the move. Sarah retrieves Casey by pretending to be drunk and luring some of Melville's men away from him. She takes out two, while Casey shoots the others. Meanwhile, Chuck finds the nanochip in the glass of a very snooty French partygoer (think the Maitre'd in Ferris Bueller), who insults Chuck within an inch of his life and claims Chuck wouldn't even know a good Two Buck Chuck if it was splashed in his face. Chuck steals the glass, runs into Melville's men, and if you think the Intersect has a fighting skill available while holding a glass of wine, you'd be right.
Chuck manages to get back to Sarah, who was waiting on a terrace with a breathtaking view (or a nice blue screen shot, but whatevs). It's the perfect opportunity to propose, but they have to rappel down the wall, so that's on hold.
Back in Burbank, Big Mike was ready to send Lester's arranged wife, Jinsana, on her way. Until Lester sees how hot she is. Suddenly he's OK with this whole "arranged marriage" thing. ("Mr. Patel, you lucky little Canadian.")
LESTER: She's a 12. It's the stuff of legend: a flawless Hinjew specimen. (and Canadian-friendly, too)
Lester prepares the back room to make it look like he's all for being Hindu, Jewish, and Canadian at the same time with some Manischewitz wine, poutine, Jeff (Scott Krinsky) playing the sitar, wearing a toque, and videos of hockey. Truthfully, Jinsana wasn't up for how traditional Lester was, so he convinces her he was doing all of this to try and please her. He promised to show her "the real Lester." And he did...by having a Jeffster! performance of Whitesnake's "Is This Love." And now we know why Tawney Kitaen went off the deep end. Jinsana called it the most uncomfortable five minutes of her life. She ran out of the store so quickly, she left skidmarks.
Chuck and Sarah had to return to France to do a little entrapment of Melville. They would sell Melville a nanochip with a tracker so the French SIS could take out their entire organization. Beckman tells Sarah to make the drop herself...again out of earshot of Casey and Chuck. However, what wasn't out of earshot was Chuck and Morgan discussing the proposal. Sarah corners Morgan in his office (seriously, we need more Sarah/Morgan scenes; they're hysterical). Morgan tells her everything, and she feels a bit guilty about telling him the story about her parents. She decides to take over the operations and turns Morgan into a double-agent, as it were.
SARAH: We are going to make the proposal happen. For Chuck's sake. And for mine.
In France, things are going well. Chuck keeps an eye on Sarah, Sarah waits for Melville to show, and Morgan talks to each of them individually to set up the proposal. The exchange happens smoothly...except for the person taking pictures unbeknownst to Sarah. It all looks too easy...and then Chuck runs into Melville and his men, who want their money. But one Intersect flash later, all is well again. And now the proposal is ON! Even Casey pitches in from Castle, making sure Sarah picks up the ring Chuck dropped and slipped it back into his pocket. Chuck talks about being in the most beautiful place ever, and it wasn't the balcony of the chateau. It was any place where Sarah was. (Awwwww....) He gets down on one knee, and.....a CIA extraction team swoops in and arrests Sarah for treason.
Back at Castle, Sarah is locked up in a holding cell and Chuck wonders why he waited so long to propose and didn't want to propose to her in her holding cell. Casey could sympathize, because he tried to propose to Kathleen at Niagara Falls, only things got screwed up due to being shipped out and he had to propose in a Buffalo bus station. But proposing to the right girl is more important than proposing in the right place. Chuck goes to Sarah and wants to propose again. But Sarah tells him everything. Her arrest was a setup. Intelligence agencies throughout the world now think she's a double-agent on a rogue mission. And she is...to take down Volkoff and rescue Mary Bartowski. All of this was Beckman's idea. Chuck is devastated, but Sarah wants him to hang on for a little while longer, because she knows how important it is for Chuck to get his mother back. They kiss before she is led away.
