Quotes

India Stoker: He used to say, sometimes you need to do something bad to stop you from doing something worse.

Evelyn Stoker: You know, I've often wondered why it is we have children in the first place. And the conclusion I've come to is... At some point in our lives we realize things are screwed up beyond repair. So we decide to start again. Wipe the slate clean. Start fresh. And then we have children. Little carbon copies we can turn to and say, "You will do what I could not. You will succeed where I have failed." Because we want someone to get it right this time. But not me... Personally speaking I can't wait to watch life tear you apart.

[first lines]

India Stoker: My ears hear what others cannot hear; small faraway things people cannot normally see are visible to me. These senses are the fruits of a lifetime of longing, longing to be rescued, to be completed. Just as the skirt needs the wind to billow, I'm not formed by things that are of myself alone. I wear my father's belt tied around my mother's blouse, and shoes which are from my uncle. This is me. Just as a flower does not choose its color, we are not responsible for what we have come to be. Only once you realize this do you become free, and to become adult is to become free.

[last lines]

Sheriff: In a hurry? Know how fast you were doing?

India Stoker: [speaks in Italian]

Sheriff: Pardon?

India Stoker: [translating for him] Effectively fast, Mister Sheriff.

Sheriff: Effective for what?

India Stoker: To get your attention.

Charles Stoker: She always used to say: "There's nothing a man could master that a woman couldn't make."

India Stoker: What do you mean?

Evelyn Stoker: That sounds better in French.

India Stoker: You look like my father.

Charles Stoker: I am so sorry.

India Stoker: It's your loss, too.

India Stoker: Have you ever seen a picture of yourself, taken when you didn't know you were being photographed, from an angle that you don't usually see when you look in a mirror, and you think: "That's me... that's ALSO me." Do you know what I'm talking about?

Whip: I think I do. So you are surprised at yourself? Does that mean you are not afraid of being touched anymore?

India Stoker: Please don't spoil it.

India Stoker: What do you want from me?

Charles Stoker: To be friends.

India Stoker: We don't need to be friends. We're family.

Evelyn Stoker: India, who are you? You were supposed to love me, weren't you?

Mrs. McGarrick: You may be all grown up, but you still get eggshells all over the floor.

[stooping down]

Mrs. McGarrick: Have you outgrown your shoes?

Pitts: Hey, Stoker, I'm talkin' to you... Or do you go by Stroker now, because I hear that's what your mom been doing... to your uncle. Have you been getting in on that?

Charles Stoker: Of course I still love you, Richard. I just have to love you a little bit less now.

Charles Stoker: Too cold down there?

India Stoker: No.

Charles Stoker: I'm glad I brought your father's belt, mine would be way too short.

Charles Stoker: Happy birthday India.

Evelyn Stoker: [on Charlie] We're so grateful that he's taken time away from his commitments in Europe.

Gwendolyn Stoker: [surprised] Europe?

Evelyn Stoker: Yes.

Charles Stoker: Put on some dry clothes and play with us.

Whip: I'm seriously hurt.

Charles Stoker: Shut up.

Whip: Follow the bouncing ball, jackass. She's not interested.

Evelyn Stoker: India. Come meet your Uncle Charlie.

Charles Stoker: It's going to rain.
