It's surprising that this documentary about the hippie counterculture was made in 1970. Were there still THAT many squares who still needed to be hepped to the scene at that point? The focus is on hippie drug usage, with particular emphasis on the use of injected methedrine and marijuana. The film is not a litany of outrage: it tries to put drug usage in context, referring to the adult preference for coffee, cigarettes, booze, and over the counter medications. And who better to narrate the story than pothead Robert Mitchum? With side trips (so to speak) to London, Istanbul, and Nepal, this relatively non-judgemental (though still anti-drug) film will blow your mind.
