I was really excited when I heard that there was going to be an animated version of Supernatural, but after watching the first episode I'm severely disappointed. Rather than presenting itself as a tie in animation that has new stories or fills in back stories with more information, the debut episode is merely a bad rehash of the 'Skinwalker' episode of the original. No back story is given, so I doubt the anime could act as a standalone series either. Maybe as I had the dub rather than subtitles, but the scripting was terrible. Exposition is handed to the audience with no attempt at acting or tying into the storyline. The animation isn't bad, but also nothing brilliant about it (the Impala doesn't look quite right) It was a nice touch getting Padalecki to voice Sam, but without Ackles it just doesn't work. It might have been a better move to simply have different voice actors for both characters, rather than have one brother sound 'right' and the other not quite spot on. Though I'll watch a few more episodes to see if there is improvement, based on the first installment, I'd not recommend it to anyone.
