Jordan Crowder got the idea while reading about "Freddy Vs. Jason" in a free magazine he got from his local movie theater. He claims to have been reading it in the bathroom.
Kristian Matte (the actor who played Jason) actually played Michael Myers in the subway shot of Michael going to work in the introduction. If you look in the background, passengers are acting scared and Jordan Crowder plays Ricky and Julian Di Nardo (Hannibal) plays Norman Franklinson, both characters from Crowder's previous short films.
Jordan Crowder claims that he is not a fan of horror films. He had to watch all the films in order to write the parody.
Jordan made "Horror Friends" while in film school at Champlain College during a semester where he had no production classes. The project essentially replaced a film course and took about a month to shoot over 4 weekends. Later in the year he re-cut the short and used it for credit in a Satire course, which is the version currently available.
Rob Zombie, director of the "Halloween" remake, picked "Horror Friends" to feature on YouTube's homepage on Halloween 2007.
