THIS MAN DAWSON – Thief of the City - 1959
This is episode 21 of the 1959-60 Police series, THIS MAN DAWSON. The series ran for a total of 39 episodes. Keith Andes headlines the series about an Ex-Military Officer hired to run a big city Police Department. The city is never named. Each episode starts and finishes with William Conrad doing the narration of the night's story.
The mob is really getting annoyed with the success Police Chief Keith Andes is having in curtailing their criminal activities. They come up with an idea to get Andes ousted by the local city government. Using a front company, they buy up a block of old apartment buildings. They then announce that they will be tearing down the apartments to build a new office tower. The residents are given 30 day eviction notices.
The residents, many of whom are war vets, refuse to leave. They cannot afford to move their families etc. They vow to fight the evictions, with guns if need be. The mob hopes there will be violence when the Police are called to remove the people after the 30 days. Violence of course will make the Police, and their Chief, Andes look like a-holes. The Mob hopes the negative publicity while cause the City to fire Andes.
And the mob fully intends to stir the pot. They send workers in to start demolishing the block before the 30 days are up. The Police are called and there is almost a shooting. Andes, does some serious talking with the contractors about holding off for a while. (Andes does not know the contractors are a mob front company) The company refuses to back off and matters escalate. The mob then sends in a gunman to take shots at the Police in order to start a shoot-out.
Andes and the Police finally tumble to the mob play and round up all the main players. This of course puts the mob even further back than when they started.
A neat, efficient episode. The production makes good use of the Bunker Hill area in Los Angeles as a stand in for the un-named city of the series.
The cast features, Larry Chance, Robert Foulk, George Pierrone and Scott Peters as the mobsters.
