THIS MAN DAWSON Sweet Charity - 1960
This is episode 39 of the 1959-60 Police series, THIS MAN DAWSON. The series ran for a total of 39 episodes. Keith Andes headlines the series about an Ex-Military Officer hired to run a big city Police Department. The city is never named. Each episode starts and finishes with William Conrad doing the narration of the night's story.
Vinton Hayworth and Laurie Mitchell work as fund-raisers for various charities. They are quite good at what they do and only keep a small amount to cover their expenses. The mob sees this as a possible cash cow and move in. A gun in the face convinces Hayworth and Mitchell to play along. The mob of course pads the expenses and only passes on $4 out of every $50 raised.
When the fund raisers hit Police Chief, Keith Andes city, Andes smells something fishy. He calls in Hayworth and Mitchell for a chat and to look at their books. Totals seem to match but the expenses seem out of whack to Andes.
Andes has his detectives look further into the pair and their background. They soon dig up the Mob connection, Joe De Santis. De Santis is an old style gangster who is not in the least adverse to violence.
Andes, decides to arrange a sting operation by having a local wealthy widow, Marion Ross, set up a charity ball. Andes also arranges for all rooms, TV and print ads for the charity to be free. There are no expenses for the mob to write off. This brings De Santis out of the background to make a play for the $60,000 raised. Andes and his men are waiting for such a move and they quickly gobble up the gangster for a trip to jail.
Again, a pretty good episode of a very well made series.
