I first watched Little Changes a few days ago with a friend. I was gobsmacked. Whilst this film may not consciously follow any of the typical storytelling conventions and isn't even noticeably coherent, I didn't share my friend's opinion that the film has "no point", or in fact that making a typically coherent, linear film is quite as important as it is made out to be these days. On the contrary I think this film's greatest strength (and yet something many viewers will find challenging or irritating) is its layered and fascinating use of metaphor.
Little Changes sticks around in the mind several days after seeing it. This is not only due to the seemingly unresolved narrative and entertainingly bizarre character performances, but also for the extraordinarily inventive and intense imagery. Unusual skewed camera angles are coupled with impressively dystopian sets and locations. There are distinct echoes of David Lynch, Terry Gilliam and Jeunet & Caro.
Even for those who might be turned off by the prospect of "not getting" a film, for its beautiful imagery and superbly crafted atmosphere Little Changes is a short that deserves to be seen.
