"This is TV's highest honor – us celebrating us," Stephen Colbert announced at the start of the 2017 Emmy Awards. "Tonight, we binge ourselves." It was a joke about smug self-congratulation probably intended to sound more ironic than it did. The Emmy ceremony, as always, was a night of the television world celebrating itself as the best Western civilization has to offer, not to mention an all-around swell bunch of people. The ego in the room was a marvel to behold – even when Seth MacFarlane wasn't onscreen. Colbert did his best with his Trump gags,...

Barry Jenkins and Tarell Alvin McCraney poses backstage with the Oscar® for Adapted screenplay, for work on “Moonlight”
“This is not a joke. Moonlight has won Best Picture. “Moonlight,” Best Picture [He holds up the card announcing the winner]”
After the “Cinderella, little-movie-that-could, made for only $1.5M with zero stars,” won Best Picture at the 89th Oscars, Moonlight easily became our first pick of one of the many highlights from Sunday’s show.
Back in the pressroom director/producer Barry Jenkins said about the mixup, “No explanation. Things just happen, you know? But I will say I saw two cards. And so things just happen, you know? I did ‑‑ but ‑‑ and because ‑‑ I wanted to see the card to see the card. And Warren refused to show the card to anybody before he showed it to me. And so he did. He came upstairs, and he walked over to me, and he ‑‑ he showed the card. Everybody was asking,...

Looks like, with this goof up, Oscar 2017 will be in everyone's mind for years now! It was going on smooth and well, until the bizarre incidents took place at the end of the gala night when ‘La La Land’, which won six trophies including best director and actress, was incorrectly declared as the best picture winner by Beatty and Faye Dunaway at the ceremony. However, midway through their victory speech, the producers of the musical film, realised the error and John Horowitz announced that the award actually belonged to ‘Moonlight’. Many thought that he was just making a statement but then he cleared that he was not joking and showed the audience, the card which read ‘Moonlight’. "I want to tell you what happened. I opened the envelope and it said Emma Stone, La La Land. That's why I took such a long look at Faye and at you. I wasn't trying to be funny,...

After the stars and cast of La La Land took the stage to accept the 2017 Academy Award for Best Picture on Sunday, it was revealed that there was a mistake – instead Moonlight was the winner.
La La Land producer Fred Berger was in the middle of delivering his acceptance speech when staff from PricewaterhouseCoopers entered the stage. Suddenly, he remarked, “We lost by the way but you know.”
Then producer Jordan Horowitz stepped back up to the microphone, stating, “There’s been a mistake. Moonlight won.”
“It’s not a joke,” he said. “This is not a joke, come up here.

Saturday Night Live will air a tribute to Prince titled "Good Night Sweet Prince" in their 11:30 p.m. time slot tonight, and while footage from the icon's three visits to the SNL stage will likely be featured, it's a good bet that this won't make it to broadcast: SNL alum Tim Kazurinsky has shared video of Prince's impromptu performance at the all-star SNL 40 afterparty.

Why He's On Our Radar: With four films at Sundance 2013 and a whopping seven (four features and three shorts) at the recently wrapped 2013 SXSW Film Festival, Austin-based actor/filmmaker has already had a banner year -- and it's only mid March. Mars, last at SXSW with his directorial debut, the Dallas Cowboys documentary "America's Parking Lot," spent the bulk of his time at SXSW this year shelling his lead role in the moving dramedy "Good Night," co-starring "Girls" regular Alex Karpovsky. On the feature front, Mars also had supporting parts in "Pit Stop," "A Teacher" and "Computer Chess," all of which premiered in Park City before making their way to Austin (and all of which were made in Texas). And on the short front, he played a heavy metal rocker in "Black Metal," and appeared in "Follow" and "Hell No." What's Next: "I just did a couple days on David Gordon Green...

I'll start off by saying that I think it's hard to beat a well crafted ensemble piece that features a talented cast. And does Good Night ever feature a talented cast. If the names Todd Berger, Alex Karpovsky, Jason Newman and Chris Doubek don't mean anything to you, you haven't been paying adequate attention. Get those four together on (or off) screen and you can be guaranteed good things are going to happen. And there's not a shabby performance to be found here, with actors previously unknown to me (Samantha Thomson, Laura Clifton, Parisa Fakhri, Elizabeth Riley and Jeff Benson) all giving top notch performances.

After several years in the making, Sean Gallagher's Austin-shot film Good Night debuted at SXSW -- find out more about the journey from Gallagher in Elizabeth's interview. The good news is that since this narrative provides glimpses of the past, the filmmaker was able to capture the main characters over a time span that could mirror the fictional narrative.
Good Night revolves around a young twentysomething couple, Leigh (Adriene Mishler) and Winston (Jonny Mars) Rockwall, as they gather with their closest friends to celebrate Leigh's twenty-ninth birthday. The guests enjoy casual conversation as well as controversial and current topics as they enjoy their dinner, until Leigh drops a bomb having a profound effect on them all. The guests, including Leigh's best friend Alice (Samantha Thomson), all react differently as they process the news. Through voice-overs and flashbacks we learn how each person became connected to Leigh.
Mishler is sweetly exquisite as Leigh,...

One of the best films I’ve seen at SXSW is “Good Night" by Sean H.A. Gallagher, a striking ensemble piece that looks at one night in the lives of a group of thirtysomethings as they unwittingly assemble for an announcement from their friend Leigh (Adriene Mischler): Her leukemia, which has been in remission for the past three years, has returned. It’s not going away. Leigh and husband Winston (Jonny Mars) invite their nine closest friends over for Leigh’s birthday party. It’s a fairly regular soiree, with the couples chatting and laughing, bringing up topics light (marijuana), serious if humorously broached (the World Trade Center attacks) and awkward (a lawyer, played by Alex Karpovsky, works 60-75 hours a week, while his wife works even longer hours; they give strained grins and say little to each other). But some aspects of the night are strange: Winston...

It's festival trailer premiere season and we've got another SXSW exclusive for you. This time it's the feature debut Good Night from director Sean H. A. Gallagher. Though the premise sounds a bit dark, the trailer looks like a lot of fun. The Narrative Spotlight title features a great cast that includes Alex Karpovsky (Girls), Todd Berger (It's a Disaster), Jonny Mars (A Teacher), Adriene Mishler, and Chris Doubek (Lovers of Hate). Check out the synopsis below, followed by the teaser. Leigh's 29th birthday party takes a sudden turn when she announces that the evening may be the last time her friends see her alive. A night of questions, coping and debauchery immediately follow. Austin filmmaker Sean H.A. Gallagher has assembled a talented pool...

Sean Gallagher's full-length feature directing debut, Good Night, is premiering at SXSW on Monday, March 11 at the Rollins Theatre (screening info). This intimate drama depicts a dinner party in which the young hostess reveals some difficult news to her friends. The cast includes local actors Adriene Mishler, Jonny Mars, Chris Doubek and sometimes-Austinite Alex Karpovsky, as well as University of Texas alum Todd Berger.
Gallagher lives in Austin, and not only directed this film (which he shot here), but wrote and produced it as well. He's written and directed two shorts as well, Fuck and Out of Water. During his time at Ut, he was the first recipient of the Samuel Fuller Award for Cinematic Intransigence.
He answered a few questions (via email) about his new film, improvisation and inspirations.
