Reptile is reimagined as having a disease called harlequin ichthyosis, which gives him scales and back-to-front eyeballs. This is an actual existing condition, but in recent times medical breakthroughs have extended the lives of those suffering from this ailment (the oldest is 25, born in 1986).
Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon himself has noted that the film was "awesome," though he did note that it "probably crosses the line as far as re-imagining goes." He later stated that he thought it was "incredibly well done" and that it was "a legitimate alternate universe Mortal Kombat."
In the Mortal Kombat games, Jackson "Jax" Briggs was an army major; in this film he is a detective. However, at the beginning of the film, on the detective's door, the last two letters of his first name are faded, reading as "Jacks" (Jax).
