Storyline

This documentary series looks at the evolution of specific character types appearing on American primetime episodic television from post WWII to the early twenty-first century. These characters were often a reflection of the times and often shaped by world events such as WWII, the Vietnam War and 9/11, but some also influenced behavior and attitudes, especially of such characterizations in future television shows. Landmark characterizations are presented and the reasons for them being landmarks are discussed. Written by Huggo

United States of Television: America in Primetime
16 May 2013 | by (United Kingdom) – See all my reviews

There are many American sitcoms and drama that have grabbed my attention, and some that I haven't got into but would be very interested in watching and trying, and the programme that I found out about was a good opportunity to reminisce on this television. Presented by Alan Yentob, this documentary series looks back on American television in prime-time, i.e. evening times when shows get millions of viewers, from the past and continuing into the present, and focusing on particular characters as well how the most popular concepts have changed over the years in both sitcom and drama. The popular concepts focused in the programme are Man of the House, i.e. the father figure or working family man, The Misfit, i.e. the member of an environment, group or in society that does not fit for whatever reason, The Independent Woman, i.e. the confident professional woman who has a secure job and works hard to keep their wellbeing and family together, and The Crusader, the man or woman who stays on the right side of the law and either professional or unorthodox ways to do good.
