Global Road targets $1bn production war chest

Company aiming for 15 annual Us releases by 2020.

Global Road Entertainment aims to amass a $1bn production war chest over the next three years as it targets 15 annual Us releases by 2020, eight or nine of which are anticipated to be developed and produced in-house.

The $1bn goal was announced to buyers at a private presentation in Berlin yesterday and it is understood the provenance of that funding could combine capital from Global Road owners Tang Media Partners (Tmp) and a cash raise.

The presentation at the Sony Center in Berlin on Thursday by president of worldwide theatrical marketing Jack Pan was accompanied by a sizzle reel of films by Global Road’s senior executive suite from their time at other studios, and hinted at the type of content CEO Rob Friedman wants to make.

Speaking to Screen on the eve of the Efm along with his president of international Rodolphe Buet, Friedman said he was

Berlinale: Studiocanal Introduces ‘One Nation, One King,’ ‘Mia and the White Lion’ (Exclusive)

Studiocanal, the film-tv production-distribution affiliate of Vivendi’s Canal Plus Group, will bring onto the market at Berlin one of France’s biggest plays of the year: “Un peuple, et son roi” (“One Nation, One King”), which Studiocanal will open in France on Sept. 26.

Budgeted at €16.9 million ($20.8 million), “One Nation, One King” is director Pierre Schoeller’s (“The Minister”) attempt to convey the scale of events of the 1789 French Revolution from the point of view of ordinary people, who for the first time were able to power events and develop a national consciousness instead of remaining passive victims.

Those revolutionaries are represented by two of France’s most-awarded young leads: Gaspard Ulliel, who won a best actor Cesar Award for Xavier Dolan’s “It’s Only the End of the World,” and Adèle Haenel, Cesar-nominated four times in the last decade, winning supporting actress for “Suzanne” and actress for “Love at First Fight.” Olivier Gourmet (“[link

Lionsgate to Open ‘Hunger Games,’ ‘Divergent’ Attractions in Madrid

Lionsgate and Parques Reunidos plan to open the first European Lionsgate branded indoor entertainment center in Spain in 2020, with attractions based on “The Hunger Games,” “Divergent,” and “Mad Men.”

The facility will be located at the Estación Príncipe Pío in Madrid. The companies’ first Lionsgate Entertainment City will open in Times Square in New York City in 2019.

The companies did not disclose specifics of the attractions based on the dystopian Hunger Games and Divergent properties, in which factions are at war with each other. However, facility will include a challenge course and climbing wall, state-of-the-art motion simulator, 4D theater, and location-based Vr experiences. It will also contain a restaurant and lounge inspired by the one frequented by Jon Hamm’s Don Draper character in “Mad Men.”

The Invisible Man screenwriter confirms his Dark Universe exit

Universal Pictures certainly had high hopes for its Dark Universe – a shared cinematic universe featuring its Classic Monsters – with the studio assembling a host of A-list talent for projects such as Bride of Frankenstein, The Invisible Man, Creature From the Black Lagoon and The Wolf Man.

Unfortunately, said universe didn’t get off to the best of starts with the release of the Tom Cruise-headlined The Mummy, leading Universal to apply the brakes and indefinitely postpone the next instalment, Bride of Frankenstein, which was due to go into production this year under Beauty and the Beast director Bill Condon.

Well, it seems Bride of Frankenstein isn’t the only Dark Universe project on hold, as screenwriter El Solomon (Men in Black, Now You See Me) has also revealed to Digital Spy that he is no longer attached to The Invisible Man, which would have starred Johnny Depp in the title role.

Top 20 Acquisition Titles of the 2018 Sundance Film Festival Star Keira Knightley, Ethan Hawke, and More

  • Indiewire
When Amazon Studios won “The Big Sick” with a $12 million bid, it was no surprise: it came to the festival very aware of the film and what it could offer, and were ready to pay. Netflix plopped down $12.5 million on “Mudbound” just to lay claim to the festival’s biggest buy; no one else was in the running.

This year brings a different set of expectations. Top dog Fox Searchlight lost its $9.5 million investment in “Patti Cake$,” which barely scaled $1 million worldwide. Weinstein Co. and Broad Green are gone, and Amazon is under management duress, having lost leader Roy Price to a sex scandal. It will look for the right buys with an Oscar predigree — but may not be willing to take huge risks.

Of course, others are here to fill the gaps. These include Annapurna’s new distribution company, which has an exclusive output streaming deal with Hulu, as

The Preview Reel: Just Getting Started

Welcome to this week’s “Preview Reel” column, where we look at the week’s upcoming wide-release movies. Coco dominated the Thanksgiving holiday and then again last weekend. There are no signs that it will slow down as there is only one major release scheduled for this week, the Morgan Freeman-led comedy Just Getting Started. Disney has been enjoying a good last couple of months as they released Thor: Ragnarok, Coco, and has Star Wars: The Last Jedi coming out next week. Until then, let’s see if Just Getting Started is worth your time.

Just Getting Started

What we are excited about: The cast is about the only thing we’re excited about with this movie. Morgan Freeman, Tommy Lee Jones, and Rene Russo together in a comedy sounds promising. Add in the director of Tin Cup (1996) and Bull Durham (1988), Ron Shelton, and you should at least get a solidly entertaining movie.

Dave Franco Opens Up About How Alison Brie Was ‘Really the Only Option for Marriage’
Dave Franco had an unusual deal breaker when it came to choosing a wife.

The Lego Ninjago actor, 32, revealed that his love for his two cats, Harry and Arturo, didn’t always leave room for a partner on Thursday night’s The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon.

“I don’t know how I became the quirky cat guy,” he told Jimmy Fallon. “At one point in my life I was the single guy with two 16-pound cats.”

When it came to how his devotion to his cats complicated his love life, Franco admitted it wasn’t always easy finding someone who would understand.

Dave Franco sits on a metal chair in a stripped-down Beverly Hills hotel room looking as happy as he can be. All that stuff you read about the actor’s infectious smile being the most winning in the business? Not fake news.

You won’t actually get to see that gregarious grin in Franco’s latest movie, however. In The Lego Ninjago Movie he merely provides the voice of animated brick boy Lloyd, a troubled teen who leads a squad of ninjas against the evil Garmadon who wants to destroy their ancient/modern/futuristic island city.

But even though you won’t get a gander at the 32-year-old star of Neighbors, 21 Jump Street and Now You See Me in the animated feature,

Twilight Star Kellan Lutz Thinks a Reboot Is a Bad Idea
It's been almost five years since The Twilight Saga came to an end with Breaking Dawn - Part 2, and there have been plenty of rumors swirling about the franchise eventually returning to the big screen, but one star doesn't think it should happen. Kellan Lutz, who played Emmet Cullen in all five Twilight Saga movies, revealed in a recent interview that he doesn't think a reboot would make sense in this day and age. Here's what the actor had to say below.

"If Twilight was made in the 1980s or '90s, and then now we have all of the special effects, then yeah, cool, reboot it. But I don't really feel like... I mean, we had great special effects in that movie. Especially Breaking Dawn with Bill Condon. The movies look beautiful and they aren't these action-packed movies or these massive worlds like Marvel where you could reboot it

Lionsgate Re-Ups Patrick Wachsberger as Head of Motion Picture Group

Lionsgate Re-Ups Patrick Wachsberger as Head of Motion Picture Group
Lionsgate has renewed its long-term contract for veteran executive Patrick Wachsberger as head of its motion picture group.

Wachsberger, an expert in foreign sales, has oversight of Lionsgate’s feature film acquisitions, production, and distribution. He and Rob Friedman re-launched Summit Entertainment in 2007 with a beefed-up production slate, leading to Lionsgate buying Summit for $412 million in 2012 after Summit hit paydirt with the enormously successful “Twilight” franchise.

After the merger, Wachsberger and Friedman were named co-presidents of the motion picture group with Summit maintained as a separate releasing label. Friedman left Lionsgate a year ago.

Terms of Wachsberger’s new contract were not available. Lionsgate will hold its annual shareholders meeting at the Toronto International Film Festival on Sept. 12.

During his tenure, Lionsgate’s top performers have been the Hunger Games franchise, which grossed nearly $3 billion worldwide, and “La La Land,” which grossed nearly $450 million worldwide and won six Academy Awards. Other

Sony Pictures is Rumored to Be Adapting Marvel Comics' Nightwatch with Director Spike Lee

Sony Pictures is reportedly planning to adapt Marvel Comics' Nightwatch into a feature film. The news comes from Jeff Snieder during a recent episode of the podcast Meet the Movie Press. He says that he's "very confident" that the project is happening and went on to reveal that the script is being written by Edward Ricourt (Jessica JonesNow You See Me, Wayward Pines) and that the studio is looking at hiring Spike Lee (Do the Right Thing, Oldboy) to direct it.

Nightwatch is a lesser known Marvel character and has only made a small number of appearances in the comics. He had his own comic in the 90s but it was short lived because it the look of the character was way too similar to Spawn.

The character actually has a pretty fascinating origin story and is a very different character than Spawn:

Rumor: Is Sony Developing Nightwatch For Their Spider-Verse?

In case you have been living under a rock for the past few months, Sony is developing a universe built around Spider-Man characters, in the same world as established in Spider-Man: Homecoming, but not a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. If that doesn’t make sense, I don’t know what to tell you, as we are all still scratching our heads trying to figure out exactly what Sony's Amy Pascal, producer on Homecoming, meant when she said such things.

Sony officially has a Venom film starring Tom Hardy on the way, followed by Silver & Black which will focus on Spider-Man characters Silver Sable and Black Cat. Venom is set to release on October 5, 2018 with Silver & Black following on February 8, 2019. With that aggressive a release schedule, surely Sony is close to choosing a third film for their Spider-Verse?

Jeff Sneider of Meet the Movie Press reports that Sony is
