‘Allegiant’ Debuts Atop Disc Sales Charts

21 July 2016 12:21 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Lionsgate’s “Allegiant,” the third installment of the studio’s teen-centric sci-fi “Divergent Series,” debuted at No. 1 on the Npd VideoScan First Alert sales chart, which tracks combined DVD and Blu-ray Disc unit sales, and the dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart the week ended July 17.

The film’s solid home video performance follows an underwhelming box office run that saw it take in just $66.2 million at U.S. theaters, about half the tally of its predecessor, “Insurgent.” The final installment of the franchise will skip theaters and head to TV, as Variety first reported Wednesday.

Sony Pictures’ faith-based “Miracles From Heaven” also enjoyed a healthy home video bow, taking No. 2 in the wake of a $61.7 million domestic box office run, selling 60% as many units as “Allegiant.”

Disney’s “Zootopia” continued to perform well on disc, taking No. 3 in its sixth week, while DreamWorks Animation’s Fox-distributed “Kung Fu Panda 3,” which had been No. »

"Now You See Me" Gets A Chinese Spin-Off

17 July 2016 5:03 AM, PDT | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Lionsgate's illusionist heist caper film "Now You See Me" surprised in 2013, chalking up a strong $351 million worldwide gross despite tepid reviews. It was more than enough for the studio to think it had a potential franchise and so quickly assembled a sequel that opened earlier this year.

That film wasn't quite a success, nabbing $241 million worldwide with only $62 million of that from North American ticket sales. Earlier the studio indicated they are proceeding with a third film, and while that's still the case - it looks to be taking on another form. THR reports that Lionsgate is now looking at a spinoff movie featuring a Chinese cast and will be a Chinese-language co-production with Leomus.

The move is understandable, "Now You See Me 2" grossed $94.5 million in China alone - more than various other American features this Summer. A Hollywood screenwriter will be employed to pen the script to make sure it all comes together. »

Newswire: Magic-loving China gets its own Now You See Me spinoff

16 July 2016 2:21 PM, PDT | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

This week’s been full of useful tips for anybody trying to break into the lucrative Chinese film market. Ghosts are bad news, for instance, but (non-supernatural) magic is good. Very good, according to The Hollywood Reporter, which brings news that the card trick-based shenanigans of the Now You See Me franchise are getting a Chinese-led spinoff to capitalize on their overseas success.

The new film—produced by Chinese studio Leomus Pictures—will be shot in China and feature a mostly Chinese cast, while still trying to capture that “Woody Harrelson pulls a rabbit out of his fedora” vibe of the American originals. The company’s CEO, Jie Qiu, also told the Reporter that a Hollywood screenwriter would be on hand to ensure that Nysm canon was properly respected, and to help the studio preserve whatever the hell it is, exactly, that made Chinese audiences so enthusiastic for a fun-but-forgettable »

Chinese Audiences Will Be Treated With A ‘Now You See Me’ Spinoff Movie

You gotta sort of admire the cojones of Lionsgate brass. 2013’s “Now You See Me” was fluke hit, a movie that managed to sleep its way to $351 worldwide (most of it internationally), and while no one particularly liked it, the studio figured there was enough juice there for a sequel. They were wrong. This […]

Lack of New Releases Keeps ‘Kung Fu Panda 3’ and ‘Zootopia’ at Top of Disc Sales Charts

14 July 2016 8:32 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

With almost no high-profile new releases to impact the charts the week ended July 10, DreamWorks Animation’s “Kung Fu Panda 3,” distributed by 20th Century Fox, earned a second week atop the Npd VideoScan First Alert sales chart, which tracks combined DVD and Blu-ray Disc unit sales, and the dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart.

Holding onto the No. 2 spot on both charts for a second week was Walt Disney Studios’ “Zootopia,” which in its fifth week sold 78% as many copies as the “Panda” sequel in its second (and 71% as many Blu-ray copies).

Moving up a spot to No. 3 on both charts was Fox’s “Deadpool,” in its ninth week.

Universal Pictures’ “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2” dropped to No. 4 on the overall chart, with Paramount’s “13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi” taking No. 5.

On the Blu-ray chart, “13 Hours” was No. 4, with Disney’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” moving back up to No. »

Second Opinion – Now You See Me 2 (2016)

10 July 2016 11:30 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Now You See Me 2, 2016.

Directed by Jon M. Chu.

Starring Jesse Eisenberg, Mark Ruffalo, Dave Franco, Woody Harrelson, Lizzy Caplan, Morgan Freeman, Daniel Radcliffe and Michael Caine.

Synopsis:

The Four Horsemen resurface and are forcibly recruited by a tech genius to pull off their most impossible heist yet.

2013’s Now You See Me was a surprisingly entertaining popcorn film with a ludicrous plot and obvious twists and turns. The sequel is no different when it comes to delivering a highly stupid and implausible script but it is a really fun film that’s easy to watch and entertaining as long as you don’t think too much about it.

This time around the Horsemen have been in hiding for a year after their dramatic getaway at the end of the last film. When they stage their big comeback it doesn’t go entirely to plan and they end up »

Now You See Me 2 review – probably best you don’t

10 July 2016 12:00 AM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

A second helping of the magicians-turned-criminal-masterminds wheeze proves a tricky sell

Cinema as an art form leans on deception and misdirection just as heavily as any stage magician. But a curious thing happens when you try and show performed magic in a movie – the illusion is cancelled out and the mystery evaporates. Sleight of hand means nothing when the real magic happens in post-production. This is just one of the problems with this sequel to the conjurors-turned-criminals caper movie, Now You See Me. Called out of hiding to steal a computer chip (handily the exact size and shape as a playing card), the Four Horsemen ( a team of maverick magicians) devise a needlessly complicated series of bluffs and double-bluffs, which is then unpicked during huge chunks of shouty, self-congratulatory exposition. By which point, the audience is longing for someone to saw the cast in half. Permanently.
