‘Warcraft’ Is Better Than ‘Finding Dory’ and Other Terrifying Lessons of the Chinese Box Office

31 minutes ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Consider this: China is why “Warcraft” will have a sequel. Meanwhile, Steven Spielberg’s last three films didn’t even see a Chinese release.

This isn’t box-office trivia. China could soon be Hollywood’s biggest market, and understanding what works there will become central to production strategies. The biggest bucks will go to what’s closest to one size fits all. Movies that appeal primarily to domestic audiences will have lower budgets.

To get a sense of what that might mean, here are the top 20 Us releases in China this year. They’re ranked by their Chinese box-office gross, followed by numbers that compare their placement to the films’ domestic and total international rankings.

Top 20 2016 Us Releases in China

Variety is reporting that Jona Xiao has joined the cast of Marvel Studios & Sony Pictures' highly anticipated joint-collaboration Spider-Man: Homecoming and just like every other bit of casting for the film, details on her role are being kept under wraps for the time being.  The Jon Watts-directed feature is currently deep into principal photography in Atlanta and should continue filming throughout September. Outside of knowing the Vulture, played by Academy Award-nominee Michael Keaton, will be the main threat to Tom Holland's friendly neighborhood wall-crawler, not much has been revealed about the film's plot and/or which classic Spidey characters will feature, although there have been a number of rumors floating around on the internet the past week or so.  Xiao is probably best known for her current recurring role as Julie Yang on the AMC drama series Halt and Catch Fire and can be seen next in the »

Kevin Conroy “isn’t particularly comfortable” with The Dark Knight killing in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

13 August 2016 3:57 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Although Ben Affleck managed to win over a lot of his critics with his role as The Dark Knight in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, one aspect of the character that didn’t quite sit right with some fans was the fact that Batman racked up a body count that would shame many of the villains in his Rogues Gallery.

During an interview with IGN, legendary Batman voice actor Kevin Conroy shared his thoughts on the latest big screen incarnation of The Dark Knight, and while he praised Affleck’s performance, he also stated that he “isn’t particularly comfortable” with Batman being a killer.

“Personally I love the fact that Batman – in the stories I’ve done, and the way he’s been rendered by Bruce Timm and Paul Dini, the people I’ve worked with most closely – he never kills anybody. He doesn’t cross that line. »

Dave Franco interview: Nerve, Bowfinger, Statham, Jump Street

Simon Brew Aug 10, 2016

The co-star of Nerve on his new film, auditioning for 21 Jump Street, Bowfinger, Jason Statham and people shouting Nancy Drew...

Nerve sees Dave Franco, a man who’s built up plaudits for supporting roles in the likes of 21 Jump Street, Now You See Me and Bad Neighbours, jump above the title. Directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman (Catfish), the film lands in UK cinemas this weekend, and ahead of that, Franco headed to Britain. We caught up with him in London, and here’s what happened…

I’m a bit perturbed. Coming into the interview, I read around a bit to see what everyone else has been asking you, to try and make sure I don’t ask you all the same questions you’ve been asked before…

I like that!

Well, I’ll still ask you them, I wouldn’t get carried away.

Of course. »

Play-Arts Kai’s Black & White Superman figure from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

7 August 2016 2:50 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Square Enix has unveiled the New York Comic-Con exclusive Play-Arts Kai Black & White Superman figure Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice; standing at 10 inches tall, the figure is limited to 1000 units and is available to pre-order now, priced $149.99; take a look below…

Superman has established himself as a shining beacon of hope for humanity. In Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, he faces off against Batman, the dark hero of the DC Comics universe. We’ve highlighted the noble, classically heroic characteristics of Superman, in striking contrast with Batman’s complex dark aspect. The chest and cape utilize flexible materials, creating a wide range of motion. Superman’s iconic take-off and landing poses are easily recreated. We’ve paid special attention to the fine details, keeping close accuracy to the design of the character in the film, such as the small Kryptonian insignia etched into the waist of his suit. »

Dave Franco Explains How Wanting to Have Sex With Christopher Mintz-Plasse Launched His Career

28 July 2016 9:00 PM, PDT | Movies.com | See recent Movies.com news »

You might think that Dave Franco's career was always a given, that he would be offered big roles by virtue of being the younger brother of the already successful James Franco. That is simply not the case. Sure, name recognition no doubt helped the younger Franco when he was landing tiny cameos in movies like Superbad as Greg the Soccer Player, but as he pursued juicier roles he found himself going through the same audition process as any other actor.  Franco's big break out was 21 Jump Street. After that he started getting key roles in major movies like Warm Bodies and Now You See Me. But as Franco explained to us in a recent interview for his new movie Nerve, none of those projects would have happened were it not for a very vulgar short film he'd made with...

‘Batman v Superman’ Shoots to Top of Disc Charts

28 July 2016 2:09 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Warner Bros.’ “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” fought its way to an easy No. 1 debut on the Npd VideoScan First Alert sales chart, which tracks combined DVD and Blu-ray Disc unit sales, and the dedicated Blu-ray Disc chart the week ended July 24.

The superhero epic arrived in the home video market following a $330.4 million haul at the domestic box office, which presented the first big-screen live-action meeting of iconic comic book characters Batman (Ben Affleck), Superman (Henry Cavill) and Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot).

Upon its release, “BvS” was plagued by bad reviews that may have hampered audience enthusiasm for the film, but fans were generally more receptive of director Zack Snyder’s efforts to create a sprawling conflict between the legendary characters. On RottenTomatoes.com, just 27% of critics recorded a positive review, compared with 65% of audience voters who liked the film.

Lionsgate’s “Allegiant,” the third installment of the studio’s teen-centric sci-fi “Divergent Series,” debuted at No. 1 on the Npd VideoScan First Alert sales chart, which tracks combined DVD and Blu-ray Disc unit sales, and the dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart the week ended July 17.

The film’s solid home video performance follows an underwhelming box office run that saw it take in just $66.2 million at U.S. theaters, about half the tally of its predecessor, “Insurgent.” The final installment of the franchise will skip theaters and head to TV, as Variety first reported Wednesday.
