Unaccessible challenge, a few inspiring pieces, good contestant development, not crafty enough
9 July 2010 | by (France) – See all my reviews

Turning junk technological objects into sculptural pieces sounded interesting. There was something almost environmental about the challenge but in the end it disappointed me. The major flaw was the obscure and abstract explanations of the judges. As an ignorant I couldn't comprehend what was so special about the winner's work. It made me laugh but feel nothing. When a concept is too complex I think they should give new comers a 101 on arts and better develop their theories. It's not accessible enough, even over sophisticated at times. However some other contestants were far much more convincing and I was even able to relate to their work. From gaming to vintage there should be plenty of original and inspiring concepts to appeal your creativity. As for the dramatic and reality elements I think they were well balanced because the first brought some tension to the story when the others made it more authentic. I specially enjoyed the few scenes involving contestants talking about the others and explaining why they like them or find their work interesting. We also learned more about their background and the issues they have to deal with everyday. But in the end I was disappointed by this installment because it revealed the show's limit. Compared to Top Design or Project Runway it's just not practical enough. Arts and crafts ? Don't expect it to change your daily life. I sensed like an invisible barrier that prevented me from harvesting the pieces substance. Interior design and fashion are so much more crafty topics that I think viewers like me should feel like the show contents is out of reach. However it was probably just this challenge because the first one was exciting.
