Where Did 'Alice Through the Looking Glass' Go Wrong?

31 May 2016 3:02 PM, PDT | Rollingstone.com | See recent Rolling Stone news »

Like a heroine tumbling through the rabbit hole, Disney took its own great fall this past weekend, as prospective tentpole Alice Through the Looking Glass coughed up a meager $34 million at the box-office in its opening days of release. A paltry sum in comparison to the $116 million opening weekend that Tim Burton's 2010 original "dark" fairy tale garnered, this sequel's poor showing registered as a sizable blip in Disney's ledgers. Floppier than the average flop, Disney's new folly provided industry competitors and common filmgoers several valuable lessons about how movies are made and sold. »

Star Trek Continues: A Great Web Series and a Great Homage

28 May 2016 8:07 PM, PDT | Cinelinx | See recent Cinelinx news »

With the debut today of the sixth episode of the excellent web series Star Trek Continues, Cinelinx looks at one of the most outstanding fan-fiction projects being produced today, as it reaches its third year. This show is not only a superb tribute to the original Star Trek, it’s a well-made and entertaining series in its own right.

Any fan of the original Star Trek TV series should enjoy this impressive follow-up, which continues the Five Year Mission of the USS Enterprise. It picks up after the last episode of the original show “Turnabout Intruder” (The final scene of which is recreated in a short video vignette that precedes the series) and chronicles the 4th year of Captain Kirk and his crew going where no man has gone before.

The creative minds behind Star Trek Continues have been putting out original episodes online since May of 2013. The latest release »

First Look at Warren Beatty’s ‘Rules Don’t Apply’ Starring Alden Ehrenreich and Lily Collins

18 May 2016 10:22 AM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

With shooting taking place back in early 2014, for any other film, we might be worried about the long wait it has taken for Warren Beatty to complete his Howard Hughes drama. However, with the director known to spend his time in the editing room, delicately putting together the pieces of his puzzle, so to speak, we’ll gladly wait. Finally completed this year, the drama’s been picked up by 20th Century Fox and now we have the first look, title, and release date.

Coming from EW (in case you didn’t pick up on the egregious watermarks), we can see Alden Ehrenreich (Hail, Caesar!, a certain new Star Wars film) and Lily Collins (Mirror Mirror) in Rules Don’t Apply, which marks Beatty’s first directorial effort in nearly two decades, following Bulworth. The drama, set in 1958, follows Collins’ character as an actress and Ehrenreich as her driver, two »

Julia Roberts Earned $3M for Just 4 Days Work in Mother's Day

2 May 2016 1:05 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

When all is said and done, 2016 may be remembered for delivering some of the biggest star-powered bombs in recent Hollywood history. And you can definitely add this past weekend's holiday-themed romantic comedy Mother's Day to the list. The movie only made $8.3 million at the domestic box office, coming in 4th behind The Jungle Book, Keanu, and The Huntsman: Winter's War. We don't have an exact budget, but the movie's opening weekend take barely covers star Julia Roberts paycheck for showing up. And she only worked on the movie for 4 days!

There's no question that Julia Roberts is one of the biggest box office draws of the past few decades. But having stayed absent from the big screen over the past couple of years may have taken its toll. Roberts earned a reported $3 million for Mother's Day, according to Variety. She only appears in a supporting role that required just four days of work. »

Roberts' "Mother's Day" Paycheck Revealed

2 May 2016 6:00 AM, PDT | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Whatever you get for you mother on Mother's Day, it won't quite measure up to Julia Roberts' payout for last week's film named after the holiday. Costing $25 million to make, Garry Marshall's "Mother's Day" was completely savaged by critics and essentially ignored by audiences, taking in just $8.3 million at this weekend's box-office.

Now it has been revealed that a nice portion of the film's budget went to actress Julia Roberts - an amount that's raising eyebrows not so much for what she got paid but what little work she did to get it. Specifically Roberts garnered $3 million for just four days of work on the film.

Of course Roberts is being paid more for her marketable name than anything else, something the film's posters and trailers have been exploiting to the hilt. Roberts last major hit was 2012's "Mirror Mirror" and the actress remains one of the highest paid actresses in Hollywood. »

Julia Roberts Made $3 Million for 4 Days on ‘Mother’s Day’ (Exclusive)

1 May 2016 3:31 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Julia Roberts earned $3 million for Mother’s Day for a supporting role that required her to shoot for only four days, Variety has learned.

That means her rate — of $750,000 a day — still puts her among the top-earning actresses in Hollywood. But it’s nowhere near the record (for a woman) $20 million she received at the peak of her career for 2000’s “Erin Brockovich,” a legal story that grossed $250 million worldwide based on the sheer power of its star.

“Mother’s Day” opened with a disappointing $8.3 million over the weekend. It’s a reminder that Roberts’ days as an A-list star who could carry a movie on her own could be over — as evidenced by other recent misfires like “The Secrets in Their Eyes” and “Mirror Mirror.” But many of her celebrity peers (George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Harrison Ford) are also struggling to carry films outside sequels based on pre-existing franchises. »

Mirror Mirror on the wall who is the fairest of them all?

Oh, Charlize you're gorg but those beasts in Jungle Book are fairest to moviegoers, who plucked down another $60 million to watch dem pixels. And all those other computer generated animals in Zootopia in their eighth weekend were also still going strong. Maybe you should have dissolved into birds more often? (With a budget north of $100 million, the opening of The Huntsman reminds Hollywood of a fairly obvious lesson: not every hit is meant to morph into a cash cow franchise by sequelizing it.)

Queens of kick ass! ‘The Huntsman: Winter’s War’ feature

9 April 2016 2:01 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

The ladies of the moviegoing public are delivered a multipack of fairytale delights, care of this week’s major offering The Huntsman: Winter’s War. While there’s more than enough dwarf ‘n sword action for the guys, the prequel is notable for featuring a raft of great actresses.

Emily Blunt, Jessica Chastain, Sheridan Smith and the returning Charlize Theron fill the bill. And while male attendees won’t exactly be complaining about that, the rippling Chris Hemsworth is very much front and centre for the girls (and indeed guys) who fancy him more than a juicy apple from the Wicked Queen’s local greengrocer.

As it’s one of those rare occasions where women lead the blockbuster charge, let’s celebrate some of the most memorable female fantasy characters who worked their magic on the big and small screens. “Mirror mirror on the wall… I’m sorry I haven »

Movie Review – The Huntsman: Winter’s War (2016)

5 April 2016 2:43 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

The Huntsman: Winter’s War, 2016.

Directed by Cedric Nicolas-Troyan

Starring Chris Hemsworth, Charlize Theron, Emily Blunt, Nick Frost, Rob Brydon, Sheridan Smith, Alexandra Roach, Sam Claflin and Jessica Chastain.

Synopsis:

As two evil sisters prepare to conquer the land, two renegades Eric the Huntsman, who previously aided Snow White in defeating Ravenna, and his forbidden lover Sara set out to stop them.

When is a sequel not a sequel? Well, when it’s a prequel of course. And when is a prequel not a prequel? A sequel. Right? Such confusing things are not uncommon in Hollywood these days where the words mentioned above, as well as the unrelenting desire to create universes, are as commonplace as they ever have been. In the case of The Huntsman: Winter’s War, it has the supreme distinction (and in equal measure confusion) of being both a prequel, a sequel and lest we forgot potential universe builder. »

Disney Will Make Live-Action Movie About Snow White's Sister 'Rose Red'

31 March 2016 1:21 PM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Hollywood can't seem to get away from Snow White. In 2012 audiences were served with two movies about the fairy tale character: "Mirror Mirror" and "Snow White And The Huntsman." Four years later, we're getting a prequel to that latter film with "The Huntsman: Winter's War," which the marketing has made clear will tell us about the story before Snow White. Now, Disney is cooking up a movie that will be a sideways look at the character. THR reports that the mouse house is developing "Rose Red," which will focus on Snow White's sister. Hooray? The live action movie will come from the pen Evan Daughtery ("Snow White And The Huntsman," ironically enough), who took an original pitch by Justin Merz titled "Red" and tied it into the original fairy tale.
