Addison:What would home look like? I don't know. A farmhouse in the valley, I guess, like the one we grew up in, Liza and I. I remember hiding in the Orchard at night, looking down at the lighted windows, and waiting for our daddy to fall asleep just so we could go back inside. Do you remember that, Liza? Hmm, do you remember that?

A standard affair., 7 February 2013
Author: Mitch_Rockwell from United States

A forgettable little winter thriller, Stefan Ruzowitzky's Deadfall doesn't provide anything too worthy of note but it's not a bad time- waster either. I'm a big fan of several members of this cast and as such it was worth the watch for me just to see them perform, though none of their work is going to last as any kind of defining performance from them either. The narrative splits in too many directions, sharing it's time between characters played by Eric Bana, Olivia Wilde, Charlie Hunnam, Kate Mara, Kris Kristoffersen and Sissy Spacek, with all of their paths colliding at an explosive Thanksgiving dinner in the final act.

Bana's section relies entirely on his presence as an actor which he provides quite well and it's nice to see him back on the screen again (though I definitely preferred him the year prior in Joe Wright's Hanna) after taking a few years off lately and working in some films of questionable quality along the way. His career has taken an odd trajectory and I'd like to see him do more character-driven pieces such as this, as I think he's a strong actor who can really shine if given the proper material. He plays the big bad of the piece and gives an intimidating portrayal, with his counterpoint being the hulked up ex-con boxer played by Charlie Hunnam.

If there's anything that does manage to stand out about Deadfall I'd say it's Hunnam's performance, as he brings a lot of heart to his role, allowing a vulnerable soul to be exposed underneath his stacked frame. Pretty much at a polar opposite end of his career spectrum, Hunnam is just starting to take on projects in an attempt to transition himself from television to feature films and I really hope it works out for him in the long run since he's a young actor with plenty of talent. Here's hoping his collaborations with Guillermo del Toro can pay off.

Aside from the two of them, no one in the cast makes too much of an impression, be it positive or negative. Olivia Wilde gives one of her least offensive performances, but I'm still not a fan of hers at all and she looks especially weak since she shares almost all of her scenes with Hunnam. Kristoffersen and especially Spacek are two actors of distinguished skill, but neither are given much to work with here, though they do their best. I'm starting to like Kate Mara, certainly more than her sister, and I think she's fine in her role as a local officer who is harassed by her male co-workers but the biggest flaw in the whole picture is the ridiculous exaggerations in their "boy's club" mentality that lead to lines like her father (who is also her boss) refusing to let her hunt a murderer because she might have to "change her tampon" while she's out there. The debut script from writer Zach Dean is mostly adequate without being anything exceptional, but when it comes to that subplot it really looks abysmal.

Deadfall rounds itself out a little too conveniently to get everyone in the same room at the end and it all goes down expected paths, but I liked the cast enough for it to be a decent viewing without having anything that I'm likely to remember within it. I'm always a fan of a winter setting and the blizzard that handicaps several of the characters in the first act was a nice touch in creating the proper atmosphere for Ruzowitzky to establish a chilly tone, but overall this is just a standard affair that doesn't warrant much conversation, if any.
