Storyline

Marti Perkins, a pre-law student at Lancer University, discovers that her scholarship has been canceled and her well-meaning but irresponsible mother, Wanda has neglected to inform her. Broke and out of options, Marti realizes the only way she can stay in school is to win a place on the Hellcats - Lancer's legendary cheer squad - and the scholarship that comes with it. Despite a confrontation with the Hellcats peppy team captain, Savannah, Marti wins over coach Vanessa Lodge, makes the squad and is thrust into a competitive world unlike anything she has ever known. With her best friend Dan by her side, Marti navigates her new world as a cheerleader and Savannah's new roommate, while trying to avoid any interaction with squad member Alice Verdura, who is instantly jealous when she realizes that Marti has caught the eye of Alice's ex-boyfriend Lewis Flynn.

Glee does it better

I was actually really excited to watch this show after all the previews and promos being aired but the Pilot fell a little flat for me. The show had way too many parallels to Glee with you substituting high school for college and singing/dancing for cheerlead right down to Ashley Tisdale's character who is basically a Rachel Berry rip off and she doesn't even pull it off as good as Lea Michele in being fanatical and slightly crazed.

But that's not to say that the show was a complete flop. There were some great jokes and a great reference to "Bring It On" which has always been a very guilty pleasure for me. The lead actress Alyson Michalka did a great job and I was happy that it didn't feel too awkwardly acted as sometimes you can see in the first episode of a series. I'm going to watch a few more episodes to see where they go but if Hellcats can't carve out a niche of their own instead of trying to be a college Glee I think it won't make it past half-time of Season One.
