Winston had always been enthusiastic about the enormous military and civil potential of flying. Before the first world war he had started to learn to fly, and when appointed to be secretary of state for aviation, he returned to this with an enthusiasm which was unfortunately not matched by his skill. During 1919 he experienced two serious crashes during training.
