Colors Play a Key Role in Production Design of Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Shape of Water’
In Guillermo del Toro’s “The Shape of Water,” a woman and a humanoid ocean creature fall in love against the backdrop of Cold War tensions. While the Fox Searchlight picture, set for release Dec. 8, went to great lengths to capture its early ’60s period with stark realism, it highlighted the movie’s fantasy aspect as well, according to production designer Paul Austerberry.

In the movie, protagonist Elisa (Sally Hawkins) is a mute who lives above a movie theater across the hall from failed artist Giles (Richard Jenkins). Austerberry reflected their friendship by designing their apartment interiors to be two halves of a whole. “Her world is water surrounded with cyan, blues, aged texture and furniture shaped with curves, while his place is bounded by gold and mustard colors to signify warmth and empathy,” says the production designer.

Rich detail went into the walls of Elisa’s place, where key scenic artist Matthew Lammerich layered a version

Guillermo del Toro Praises ‘Lady Bird,’ ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’, and Ranks His Films in Lively Reddit Ama

Guillermo del Toro Praises ‘Lady Bird,’ ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’, and Ranks His Films in Lively Reddit Ama
As devoted a cinephile as he is a visionary filmmaker, Guillermo del Toro will take every opportunity to lavish praise on his favorite films. In a recent Reddit Ama (“Ask me Anything”) to promote “The Shape of Water,” the director could hardly contain his enthusiasm for Greta Gerwig’s “Lady Bird,” which he said “moved [him] deeply.” He continued: “‘Lady Bird’ is a fantastic first film. Such intelligence and acute eye for drama and cinema. Deceivingly natural, full of style.”

More in line with his style, Del Toro is a huge fan of George Miller’s “Mad Max: Fury Road,” which he called, “A masterpiece. In many ways, So kinetic, so dense, as to be digested slowly and in repeated viewings. A God at work.” He also loved Pixar’s “Coco, which was co-directed by Mexican-American filmmaker Adrian Molina. “The More World-themed stories, the better for all us storytellers,” said del Toro.

The upcoming sequel stars John Boyega as Jake Pentecost, son of Idris Elba‘s Pacific Rim hero Stacker Pentecost, who follows in his father’s footsteps to …

International Poster For Marvel’s Black Panther Gets The Claws Out

Between Avengers: Infinity War and Black Panther, the far-flung utopia of Wakanda is about to become Marvel’s playground.

The former just dropped its monumental teaser, and generated a record 230 million views in only 24 hours. That makes it the most-watched trailer of all-time – in the first day of release, that is – which is all the more impressive when you consider that New Line’s It only raised the bar to 197m back in March. Talk about appeasing a pent-up demand.

But perhaps one of the biggest talking points of Infinity War – you know, besides Captain America forgetting to pack a razor – is Wakanda, which looks to play a prominent role in Joe and Anthony Russo’s sequel. However, by the time May 4th rolls around, moviegoers will be overly familiar with Wakanda and the Black Panther hierarchy thanks to Ryan Coogler’s super-sleek spinoff.

‘The Shape of Water’: Guillermo Del Toro Takes You Inside the Best-Designed Film of 2017

‘The Shape of Water’: Guillermo Del Toro Takes You Inside the Best-Designed Film of 2017
After a decade of bringing his personal style and sensibility to larger studio movies like “Crimson Peak,” “Pacific Rim,” and the “Hellboy” series, Guillermo del Toro wanted to return to the smaller, more personal fables he created with “The Devils’s Backbone” and “Pan’s Labyrinth.”

While Del Toro’s fables don’t have the elaborate action scenes and the sprawling canvases of his franchises, they are every bit as dependent upon his visual storytelling and world-building skills. To make “Shape of Water,” del Toro put up $100,000-plus of his own money and, with a small team of collaborators, designed the world of his amphibian love story before pitching it to financiers.

“This is the reverse of what I did on ‘Pan’s Labyrinth,’” said del Toro. “Instead of pitching for the three years, trying to find the money, I developed for about two years the look of the movie

The Shape of Water

The Shape of Water (Fox Searchlight)

After the credits rolled, I wrote in my notes: "an epic and magical adult fairytale drama for the ages." This beauty and the beast fable is set in Maryland in 1963 during the height of the Cold War as well as culture wars against civil, homosexual and women's rights, and reinforces what we already know about that time period. Director/co-writer Guillermo del Toro is not afraid to let us peer backwards to see the world today, to see the world through his lens and view the real monsters that roam our planet. He paints his world in a by-gone era patina that is both warm and familiar -- the spot-on period sets with the cars, and clothes and shabby apartments, the films and TV shows -- as well as the dark and paranoid. It was a time in America's history just before the barriers

‘The Shape Of Water’ Review: Guillermo Del Toro’s Magical Masterpiece Is A Romantic Fever Dream Of A Movie

‘The Shape Of Water’ Review: Guillermo Del Toro’s Magical Masterpiece Is A Romantic Fever Dream Of A Movie
Director Guillermo Del Toro has been responsible for a number of visual wonders on the screen, from his Oscar-winning Pan’s Labyrinth to bigger-budgeted efforts such as Crimson Peak, Pacific Rim, Hellboy and many more. His lifelong love of monsters has informed much of his work, but nothing prepared me — or probably him — for the sweeping romantic magic of The Shape of Water. Although this sumptuous fantasy also involves a new Del Toro creation, a kind of Creature from…
