‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ Brings the Force to Social Media

Star Wars: The Last Jedi” brought the force to social media last week.

Disney-Lucasfilm’s tentpole has generated 892,000 new conversations and more than 1.5 million total conversations — more than four times more than the second most talked about movie, according to media-measurement firm comScore and its PreAct service. The studio released the trailer following its debut at the “Star Wars Celebration” in Orlando.

Several stars made surprise appearances at the event, including Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, and new cast member, Kelly Marie Tran. “The Last Jedi,” which opens on Dec. 15, follows up where 2015’s cultural and box office titan “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” left off.

Disney-Marvel’s “Thor: Ragnarok” showed significant traction on social media last week with more than 65,300 new conversations, pulling its total to 316,000, thanks to a teaser trailer and poster released on April 10.

In today’s TV news roundup, Syfy releases its summer premiere dates, which includes both new and returning series as well as live coverage of San Diego Comic-Con, and more. 

Premiere Dates

Syfy has unveiled its spring/summer premiere slate, which includes the grindhouse car-race series “Blood Drive,” the fifth installment of “Sharknado,” and multiple returning series including “Dark Matter” and “Killjoys.”

Blood Drive” will premiere on Wednesday, Jun. 14 at 10/9c. In the series, Los Angeles’ last good cop (Alan Ritchson) is forced to join a cross-country death race, with his only hope of survival being the femme fatale Grace (Christina Ochoa). The challenge? These cars run on human blood.

Sharknado 5 to Premiere on Sunday, August 6th on Syfy

Syfy just gave horror and sci-fi fans several days to circle on their calendars with the announcement of their spring and summer schedule, including the premiere of Sharknado 5 (working title) on Sunday, August 6th.

Other premiere dates include Blood Drive on June 14th, the third season of 12 Monkeys (airing over three nights on May 19th–21st, season 3 of Dark Matter on June 9th, season 12 of Face Off on June 13th, and season 2 of Wynonna Earp on June 9th, and season 3 of Killjoys on June 30th:

Syfy’s Killjoys will launch their next mission on Friday, June 30 at 8/7, as part of the cabler’s robust summer slate.

Sister series Dark Matter will kick off its own Season 3 weeks earlier, on Friday, June 9, with back-to-back episodes starting at 8pm, before moving to its regular 9 o’clock slot.

Mission Control Media Names Brent Burnette VP of Development

Mission Control Media has hired producer and development executive Brent Burnette as the new vice president of development, Variety has learned.

In his new role at Mission Control Media, the production company behind unscripted series like “Hollywood Game Night” and “Face Off,” Burnette will be tasked with creating and developing original formats in addition to forging new creative and talent partnerships, with a focus on comedy and digital. He will report to McM’s senior vice president of development Nicholas Oakley-Tilley as well as co-presidents Michael Agbabian and Dwight D. Smith.

“Brent brings a rich background as both a veteran developer and a skilled executor that complements our existing team incredibly well,” Smith said. “We are thrilled to have him join us at Mission Control and look forward to creating great content together.”

‘The Dinner’ Review: Steve Coogan and Richard Gere Are Enraged Siblings in Oren Moverman’s Intense Family Drama — Berlinale 2017

Oren Moverman is responsible for two of the most impressive American screenplays of the past 10 years, “I’m Not There.” and “Love & Mercy,” both of which turn ambitious approaches to personal stories into surprisingly accessible dramas. As a director, Moverman has shown a rougher edge.

His first two features, “The Messenger” and “Rampart,” were gritty, intimate stories of angry men screwed by the system that employs them (the military and the police force, respectively), while 2014’s “Time Out of Mind” took a similar approach to a man rejected by the system altogether (Richard Gere, playing a decrepit homeless man in New York). Moverman assembles these rickety dramas in piecemeal, gradually developing psychological tension out from the moments that form their lives, like a series of sparklers ignited one by one until they form a blazing whole.
