Mr Bennett wins the hand of his lady love

I rated this movie 7/10 as to this Briton it was genuinely comical in the early 1950s sense and thus achieved the producers' object.Ronald Reagan's later fame as U.S. president and close ally of Margaret Thatcher intruded for me somewhat on his characterisation as the father, and Edmund Gwenn who in 1940 famously played Mr Bennett in the first filmed version of Jane Austen's "Pride & Prejudice" likewise intruded on his character of Mr Hammond, the grocer from Pleasantville. Thus we had two of the cast whose fame elsewhere, slightly overshadowed their performances in "Louisa".I was always struck by Ruth Hussey (as I am partial to dark brunette 1940s actresses), since I saw her in "H.M. Pulham esq". with another of my dark brunette favourites, Hedy Lamarr.

Charles Coburn gave good support as Mr Bernstein who played Ronnie's boss and who played the love rival of Edmund Gwenn for the hand of the lonely widow played by Spring Byington.Yes I agree with other user comments that focusing on the love life of older people in Hollywood films was very much the exception which was generally youth obsessed.
