How Doctor Who series 8 tapped into horror

9 November 2014 4:05 PM, PST | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

The directors of Doctor Who's latest series brought back the scares in a big way. Well, fear is a superpower...

Warning: contains spoilers for every episode of the eighth series of Doctor Who.

We were promised back in August that the Peter Capaldi era of Doctor Who would mark a departure from the adventurous fairy tale approach of Matt Smith's run.

“Darker” and “edgier” are buzz words that have been applied to countless Hollywood sequels, but the eighth series actually lived up to that promise and by September, the tabloid press were dispensing think-pieces about whether or not it had become too scary for children (“scary” here standing in for “complicated” in Smith's era and “heretical” when David Tennant got a lift off a couple of angel robots in Voyage Of The Damned.)

All moral panics aside, this series brought back the scares in a big, bad way. »

This is another episode where the main plot and the threat of the week is almost overwhelmed by the staggering character work.  Wonderful camera work from the director (the steadi-cam run around the top deck of the »

Frank Cottrell Boyce completes the line-up of writers for Doctor Who series 8...

As teased earlier in the week, novelist and screenwriter Frank Cottrell Boyce (24 Hour Party People, Millions) is indeed the writer of an episode in Doctor Who's new series.

Now the news is official, the BBC has released a smattering of details about Boyce's episode, which will feature a cast of child actors including young Harley Bird (the actress who lends her voice to CBeebies character Peppa Pig), and is to be directed by Sheree Folkson (Casanova, The Decoy Bride).

In the official press bumf about the news, Steven Moffat gave Boyce's script a raving endorsement as "pure magic - and everyting I could have hoped for from the genius behind the Olympics opening ceremony!! Doctor Who is born anew in the mind of a genius".
