Film Review: ‘Please Stand By’

Film Review: ‘Please Stand By’
“Do you know how hard it is to write something? All the thinking and planning and rewriting … because the story you want to tell means so much to you.” If we were to accuse Ben Lewin’s “Please Stand By” of a cunning it doesn’t otherwise display, we might think this impassioned speech, uttered by the film’s intrepid autistic heroine, might be a kind of sly safeguard against harsher critical judgments. After all, there’s no denying the strenuously decent motivations behind this kitten-soft story of obstacles surmounted, limitations exceeded and quirks winsomely mined.

In fact intentions this good, and executions this solidly indie, used to pave the way to Sundance, as they did with Lewin’s far superior last film, the award-winning “The Sessions.” So it’s perhaps its own kind of critique, and a reflection of the changing times with which “Please Stand By” feels curiously out of step, that this Lewin

Jordan Peele quits acting to focus on directing

After making his feature directorial debut last year with the acclaimed horror-thriller Get Out, Jordan Peele has now decided to quit acting in order to focus solely on his directing career.

Daniel Day-Lewis and I are both out (laughing),” Peele told Entertainment Weekly. “Acting is just nowhere near as fun for me as directing.”

Peele initially rose to stardom alongside his comedy partner Keegan-Michael Key both on Mad TV and their own sketch series Key & Peele. The duo also produced and starring in the 2016 action comedy Keanu, while Peele’s other acting credits include roles in Wanderlust and Fargo, as well as numerous voice roles both in film and television.

Last year’s Get Out scored both critical acclaim and commercial success, grossing over $250 million worldwide from a budget of just $4.5 million. As yet, there’s been no word as to his follow-up directorial effort, but he is currently producing Spike Lee’s Black Klansman,

‘The Lego Ninjago Movie’ Review: Warner Bros. Keeps Building the World’s Most Consistently Great Animated Franchise
You probably know what Lego are, and you probably know who Batman is (don’t say “Bruce Wayne, Gotham’s billionaire playboy”), and that brand awareness helped to propel 2015’s “The Lego Movie” and this February’s “The Lego Batman Movie” into massive hits that transcended their target audience, appealing equally to adults and children alike. On the other hand — and this is a scientific fact — not a single person who’s gone through puberty has ever heard of “Ninjago.” Ninjas? Sure. The concept of going? Absolutely. But “Ninjago”? That’s definitely not a real thing, let alone a popular line of toys that’s spawned graphic novels, video games, and a television show that’s now been on the air for six full seasons.

And yet, Warner Bros. continues to insists otherwise, the studio inexplicably dedicating the pivotal third film of their massive Lego movie franchise to a property

Justin told the latest issue of Esquire magazine: "She's successful for a reason ... We're not in competition.

"If I was competing for the same job as her, I might be less forgiving."

The dark-haired hunk married the 48-year-old former 'Friends' star in 2015, and he says being catapulted into the limelight hasn't been an easy ride, but his friend advised him to think of it as having another persona who is the butt of rumours.

When asked his tips for a happy marriage, he refused to give any out

Justin Theroux Not Threatened by Jennifer Aniston's Success

Justin Theroux Not Threatened by Jennifer Aniston's Success
It's hard to match Jennifer Aniston's star power. And that's just fine with Justin Theroux. In Esquire's May issue, he admits he's "not at all" threatened by her achievements. "She's successful for a reason...We're not in competition." After a pause, he jokes, "If I was competing for the same job as her, I might be less forgiving." Fortunately, the couple—who met through Robert Downey Jr. on the set of 2008's Tropic Thunder and co-starred in 2012's Wanderlust—want to act together again. Jennifer Aniston Only Likes Justin Theroux's Beard
Jennifer Aniston isn't into the "serial killer" look. When Justin Theroux appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show Monday, Ellen DeGeneres noticed he was sporting some scruff. It reminded her of the first time they met, when he had a bushy beard for his role in Wanderlust (co-starring his future wife). In 2012, Aniston told Pop Sugar she'd met Theroux in 2008 and initially thought he was a "very dark" person. "At first you think he could be like a serial killer," she said, "but he is actually the nicest person in the world." Theroux explained the reason for his facial hair's resurgence Monday. You Can Actually Watch Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux Fall For Each Other
Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux have been together for more than five years now, and in their time together, they've managed to squeeze in more cute moments than some of Hollywood's longest-standing couples. While they are very protective of their private life, they also aren't afraid to hit the red carpet together and gush about each other in interviews - something we hope they always do. It's been easy to follow along with their love story, especially since it began - like many couples in Hollywood - on a movie set, which means you can actually watch them fall for each other with your own eyes. Jen and Justin first met in 2007 on the set of Tropic Thunder, which was cowritten by Justin and starred Jen's good friend Ben Stiller. "I thought he was very sweet and he was always very nice," she said. "But I remember thinking he was very dark.

Justin Theroux is one of Hollywood's most interesting stars.

The writer/actor never became quite as famous as many of his peers, but he was always making very interesting choices and working with some of the best filmmakers in the business, namely David Lynch, who the actor frequently has collaborated with.

He recently shot to the forefront, mostly because of his very high profile relationship with actress Jennifer Aniston, and his current leading role on the under-seen and incredible HBO series "The Leftovers". Apart from this, Theroux has flown under the radar for a large part of his career, but we were one of the few paying attention.

This October, Theroux will co-star alongside Emily Blunt in the highly anticipated thriller The Girl on the Train,

Justin Theroux Reveals His Favorite Jennifer Aniston Movie (and It'll Probably Surprise You)
Jennifer Aniston has been in countless movies, so picking your favorite one may be a bit difficult. However, we decided to put hubby Justin Theroux up to the task when we caught up with him at The Girl on the Train junket earlier today, and when he gave us his answer, we found ourselves a bit surprised. "Oh God, what's my favorite Jen movie?," Theroux repeated while thinking of his answer. "I think Cake," he responded, "not just because it was her most recent one. I loved her in Good Girl, and her comedies are fabulous. Loved her in Wanderlust...She's always so present and good." While Jen's performance in Cake was undeniable, many would have probably assumed Wanderlust...

Bad Moms review – bawdy matriarchs stick it to the PTA

Mila Kunis, Kathryn Hahn and Kristen Bell shine in this lewd but safe comedy from the writers of The Hangover that sees what happens when stressed-out mothers cut loose

Let us take a moment to give thanks to whichever deity watches over cinema for the gift of Kathryn Hahn. Ms Hahn, known more from television shows like Parks and Recreation and Transparent has popped up in comedies like Anchorman and Wanderlust as well as strong but esoteric indies like Afternoon Delight. We’ve already counted on her to take whatever she’s in and make it better. But with Carla, the baddest of the bad moms in Jon Lucas and Scott Moore’s new raunchy comedy Hahn delivers a performance that secures her position as one of the most electrifying performers on the scene today. Like a mix of Sandra Bernhard and John Belushi, Hahn’s Carla is a foul-mouthed force of nature,

9 Movies That Were Improved By Having No Money

David Wain, the director of sleeper comedies Wet Hot American Summer, Role Models, and Wanderlust thrives on a low budget. “The lower the budget, the more fun it is to do… Sometimes those obstacles spark creative solutions.”

There’s plenty of evidence supporting Wain’s theory to be found not only in his own films, but in some of the most iconic movies of the last 50 years. When you have a huge budget to rely on, it can induce laziness in the filmmakers, because every expensive shortcut is made available to you.

You typically can’t just throw money at a project and expect innovative results – just ask George Lucas – especially in today’s age of overinflated budgets. One superhero movie now costs more than all of the Best Picture nominees from the 1980 Academy Awards combined, it’s easy to forget that movies can still be made on the cheap.

Jordan Peele set to write and direct Blumhouse horror-thriller Get Out

Jordan Peele, along with his Key and Peele co-star Keegan-Michael Key, has emerged as one the strongest talents working in comedy today, but for his next project he is set to take on an entirely different genre. According to Variety, Peele has been hired to write and direct an upcoming horror-thriller titled Get Out, which will follow “a young African American man who visits his Caucasian girlfriend’s family estate.”

On his upcoming film, Peele said, “People know me for my work in comedy, but now I’ll get to focus on my passion for writing and directing horror films. Like comedy, horror has an ability to provoke thought and further the conversation on real social issues in a very powerful way.” The actor also went on to say that much like 1968’s Night of the Living Dead, Get Out will explore “race in America.”

The Intern Releases A Slew Of Images In Case You Still Need To Be Sold

Some movies just have you at hello (and if they don’t, they probably won’t ever get you), and The Intern is one of those films. Warner Bros. has released a new set of images, and they actually clue you in to more detail than the trailer, but further marketing for this one is probably a lost cause. If Robert De Niro showing up to be Anne Hathaway‘s intern doesn’t suck you in, you’re immovable.

If the added information that this one is written and directed by Nancy Meyers still doesn’t do anything for you, I don’t think there’s the slightest hope of reaching you.

As I said, the images reveal a bit more of the story, especially in the sense of De Niro and Hathaway appearing with a cute kid, but I don’t think that’s going to be big reveal
