Learn more- With just three spots in the season finale up for grabs, the final four couples on "Dancing with the Stars" waited to learn their fates Tuesday night. But they didn't have to wait long.
Just a minute into the program, hosts Tom Bergeron and Brooke Burke announced the first couple safe to dance in the final: Evan & Anna.
After the quick announcement came Len's recap, in which he reiterated that it was a sensational semifinal round in which every couple really shined. He liked Erin's Viennese waltz, but said she had to control her nerves. He said "every sense was satisfied" by Nicole & Derek's Argentine tango. Len called Chad "a revelation" and said that in any other season, he'd be a shoo-in for the final. He then called Evan's foxtrot "brilliant."
Play it again: For the encore, Len asked to see Evan & Anna's paso doble, which scored them a perfect 30.
Know the pros: A string of profiles of the four remaining dancers explained to us that Maks moved to Brooklyn from Ukraine as a child and didn't really want to dance as a youngster until he realized it was going to be his path to success. We learned that Cheryl was incredibly shy -- so much so that her mother initially thought Cheryl was deaf. Anna said her childhood in Russia wasn't easy, but it was good, and her husband ("Dancing" pro Jonathan Roberts) admitted she was a little standoff-ish when they first met. But they apparently worked things out. Derek talked about how he didn't want to dance, but was forced by his parents to go to dance lessons because his sisters were going. He moved to London to live with the Ballas Family and learn to dance, and he owes his dance career to that move.
Be our guests: Sarah McLachlan paid a visit to perform a medley of her hit "Angel" and her new single "Loving You Is Easy," which she'll be performing on the Lilith Fair 2010 tour this summer.
After a season's worth of voting on dancers and costumes, the big moment finally came as fan favorites Joey Fatone and Melissa Rycroft returned to the dance floor to perform to Kiss' "Rock 'n' Roll All Night" in costumes that were selected by viewers.
The college dance competition continued with the Rutgers University taking on Utah Valley University. Rutgers, whose formation ballroom dancing program started a month ago, scored a 21. Utah Valley, which offers a bachelor's degree in ballroom dancing, scored a 29.
Miley Cyrus brought her controversial music video to life, performing "Can't Be Tamed" for the first time on television.
Back to the results: The next couple revealed to be safely into the final was Nicole & Derek.
That left Erin & Maks and Chad & Cheryl in the bottom two. Carrie Ann said that Chad blossomed throughout the season and added that she was "very impressed" with him. Bruno said Erin was nearing the final with momentum, having gotten better and better in recent weeks. Len said that in a "normal season" both of the remaining couples would be in the final, but this season's standard was set quite high.
Tom finally announced that the couple with the lowest combined total of judges' scores and viewers votes was Chad & Cheryl.
