This film really frustrated me because it started as a nice family comedy but turned into a disturbing teen drama in the last 20 minutes. The story is rather simple two half brother who know nothing about each other are united to spend the summer with their grandmother and their younger half brother after the death of their mother. One of the brothers,Marty, has no father and lives in a youth center , the other,Paul, lives with his father and the youngest,P'tit, with his grandmother and never knew his father as well. The diversity between the three brother is what drives the first half of the film, the three lead boys are good actors but it is really ,Max Clavelly, as P'tit, that steals the show, for his young age , he has a great presence and his definitely the most likable of the three brothers. The problem I have with this film is that I really enjoyed the first hour , it felt like a light hearted family comedy but out of the blue it completely switched gears and turned into a Larry Clark film , with a strange storyline that involve a menage a trois with the two older brother (dont ask) and at the end it switch gears once again and turned into a disturbing drama when the three boys revenge on a bully turned into a nightmare (A complete rip off the film "Mean Creek") This constant change of film structured really spoiled the enjoyment I had for the film , I felt a bit cheated because the film let us believe that it was a family film but out of the blue turned into something I definitely wont let young children watch. If the film would have stayed into the right path , I believe the director could have had a hit on his hand in the form of a wonderful family film because it had great characters and a good cast and an extremely enjoyable first half...so it's very unfortunate. The worst is that a lot of question that are raised in the first half of the film are never answered (Was the mother a prostitute? ,Why is the grandma always fighting with the neighbor? Who's Marty's father?...) Another thing that annoys me is that I adore Firmine Richard , she's a wonderful actress and along with young Max , she steals the show but I find that her character arc like the other two brother is not resolves properly and this actress deserves more then this. So there we have it, this film is like three film that has nothing to do with each other melted into one , it overall feels like a mess. If the film kept the momentum of its first half , I probably would have given it a 7 out of 10 but because it didn't and just turned into a sexually overcharged mess and had a ridiculous ending that was extremely unsatisfying , I give this film a 4 out of 10. This film could have been great , very disappointed by this.
