A young California surfer, Wayne Montgomery, gets framed on phony drug charges and thrown into a Peruvian political prison for communist dissidents in 1980. Wayne encounters a series of eccentric and dangerous characters in prison who compel him to grow up in a hurry and find a way to escape. Based on a true story. Written by Anonymous
Director Camilo Vila doesn't do a lot of films and this was his first in twelve years but it's well worth the wait. It's the true story of an American teacher who lives in Peru and likes to surf. It's set in 1980 when there was a lot of political turmoil in that region. Wayne, played by John Robinson (Remember the Daze) is stopped by the cops and basically set up with drugs and then they seem to have a scam where they get wealthy looking foreign people to cough up all sorts of cash and if they don't have any they get it through the victims family. Wayne is tortured and brutalised, so has to grow up fast in this Peruvian hell hole. Corruption is rife and an honest police captain is trying to clean things up.
The acting is pretty solid by everyone and I thought John Robinson done a decent job but I particularly liked Michael DeLorenzo (A Few Good Men) who played the corrupt cop Gutierrez as he makes Wayne's life a living hell. The story itself is far from original but it still done it's job and kept me entertained for 100 minutes which surely, is all that matters is it not?
The bottom line is, good acting, decent script/story, acceptable prison setting, great production values, well cast and is a good all round film.
