SXSW Film Review: ‘Raiders!’

14 March 2015 11:30 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

There’s a good reason why TV and movies have adopted the disclaimer “Remember kids, don’t try this at home.” As inventive as they were impressionable, pint-sized super-fans Chris Strompolos, Eric Zala and Jayson Lamb nearly killed themselves on multiple occasions attempting to remake the first Indiana Jones movie, breaking it down shot-for-shot and filming each scene as best as their limited resources would allow over the course of eight summers. The result has become the stuff of fan legend, inspiring magazine articles, movie deals and what feels like the perfect Hollywood ending, which the geek-bait documentary “Raiders!” reveals for the first time, as the original trio reunite a quarter-century later to finish the airplane scene they deemed too difficult to film as kids. Often poignant, occasionally pathetic, but never short of entertaining, “Raiders!” captures the obsessive hold movies have on young people’s imaginations, as exemplified by such pics as “Son of Rambow, »

Paramount Pictures and J.J. AbramsBad Robot Productions have extended their first-look deal for three years through July 2018.

Bad Robot and Paramount’s first-look partnership began in 2006. Since then, Bad Robot’s films for Paramount have included 2008’s “Cloverfield,” 2009’s “Star Trek,” 2010’s “Morning Glory,” 2011’s “Super 8,” 2011’s “Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol” and 2013’s “Star Trek: Into Darkness.”

“Ghost Protocol” was the top performer among the Bad Robot titles with nearly $700 million in global box office.

Bad Robot is currently shooting “Mission: Impossible V,” with Christopher McQuarrie directing and Tom Cruise returning in his starring role. Cruise is also producing the franchise film, co-financed by Skydance Productions and set for a July 31 release.

8 Things J.J. Abrams Doesn’t Want You To Know About Star Wars: The Force Awakens

9 February 2015 1:17 AM, PST | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Star Wars: The Force Awakens may already be one of the most anticipated upcoming movies, cultivating daily news stories despite a far-off December release, but actual concrete information about what the film itself will entail is hard to come by. The teaser trailer set the movie’s tone nicely and some character names have since been revealed, but beyond that you’re entering highly speculative territory.

Even though producer Kathleen Kennedy assured fans that J.J. Abrams wouldn’t be as tight-lipped about his venture to the galaxy far, far away as he was about Benedict Cumberbatch’s character in Star Trek Into Darkness or the entire point of Super 8, so far things are pretty impenetrable over at Lucasfilm. Oh, there’s plenty of rumouring to be had, but none of it can really be substantiated.

What did you really expect though? Abrams is a director who relishes »

Elle Fanning joins Refn-directed horror 'The Neon Demon': 5 reasons we're intrigued

6 January 2015 6:52 PM, PST | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

A lot of people (read: most people) were left cold by "Drive" director Nicholas Winding Refn's 2013 head-scratcher "Only God Forgives," which is understandable: his second Ryan Gosling collaboration was baffling, queasy, bizarre and occasionally infuriating. But it was also bold and compelling in spots, and so aggressively weird that it felt like a daring next step for a rising director who likely had his pick of mainstream studio projects after the success of "Drive." For his next film - the arrestingly-titled horror movie "The Neon Demon" - Refn will continue marching to the beat of his own drummer alongside new leading lady Elle Fanning, who herself has made some fairly interesting choices recently with films like Sofia Coppola's "Somewhere," Sally Potter's "Ginger & Rosa" and the Joe Albany biopic "Low Down" opposite John Hawkes. Here are five reasons I'm intrigued by the Danish auteur's latest project. 1. Refn is made for the horror genre. »
