The Impossible (2012) Poster

Trivia

Many of the extras are actual survivors of the tsunami.
The family on which this story is based were present during the whole shooting process. They were giving tips, especially Maria Belon who is portrayed by Naomi Watts. The whole family also attended the film's premiere at the Toronto Film Festival in 2012.
The crew filmed partially on location at the actual resort, since rebuilt, where the Belon family was vacationing when the tsunami hit. For the tsunami destruction scenes, a scaled model of the resort was used.
According to Naomi Watts, the producers of the film heard an interview on Spanish radio where the family told their story of surviving the Tsunami and decided to make a film based on it.
For the underwater scenes, Naomi Watts was strapped in a rotating chair. While filming, Watts couldn't hold her breath any longer and she gave the 'stop' sign. Instead of stopping, the chair started spinning the other way around. Later it was revealed that it was a technical error and Watts stated that she felt very scared and hated the chair for that reason.
The scene where the tsunami hits the resort could only be filmed once. It would have cost too much money to rebuild the set.
The real color of the Ball was Yellow not Red, as shown in the film. Maria Belón said it was the "biggest lie" in the movie.
The real family that the main characters are based on are in fact Spanish but living in Japan at the time of the Tsunami.
It took a year to put together the 10-minute sequence; a recreation of the moment the wave came crashing down on the luxury hotel in Khao Lak.
The film opens with the sound of a jet because that's how Maria Belón described the sound of the Tsunami.
This movie has been one of the latest produced at the so-called "Ciudad de la Luz" studios (City of Light studios), in Spain. At October 2012 this complex announced its immediate closure due to the small number of productions that have taken place in the studios.
The screenplay for this film was featured in the 2010 Blacklist; a list of the "most liked" unmade scripts of the year.
Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor previously had an on-screen relationship in Stay (2005).
Quique Alvarez, his wife Maria Belon and their three young children were swept away by a massive wall of water as they lounged around the pool at the Orchid Resort Hotel in Thailand in 2004.
This is the second movie to have Naomi Watts pull something on a wire out of her throat. The first movie was The Ring (2002).
The film takes place from December 24 to December 27, 2004.
