When ‘A Monster Calls,’ You Answer It

12 hours ago | backstage.com | See recent Backstage news »

Despite its October release date, “A Monster Calls” doesn’t look like your standard horror-fantasy release. Between “The Orphanage” and “The Impossible,” its visionary Spanish film director J.A. Bayona has proven more than capable in depicting both supernatural and real-world horrors. With this anticipated next feature, “A Monster Calls” looks like it will combine a bit of both, as the very best dark fantasies so often do. Based on the acclaimed 2011 novel of the same name by Patrick Ness, the film follows a young boy named Connor O’Malley as he loses himself in a fantasy world to escape his single mother’s terminal illness and the incessant bullying at his school. The first two trailers alone have showcased some truly breathtaking imagery, so we can’t wait to see what its Oct. 21 release date has in store. The film stars decorated actors Sigourney Weaver and Felicity Jones, as well »

Thoughts I Had... First Look at "The Book of Henry"

28 June 2016 7:00 AM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Chris here with a first official image. Let's try not to hold Jurassic World's flatness against director Colin Trevorrow. While he may be the current whipping boy for the internet's derision at indie directors making the abrupt transition into franchise entertainments, his debut Safety Not Guaranteed had the charms and spunk to hint at a career making heartwarming fare. And wouldn't you know, that's exactly what he's got planned for this fall's The Book of Henry.

The family drama opens this September curiously right after the Toronto Film Festival wraps up. Here's the first image from the film, featuring child stars Jaeden Leiberher (St Vincent) and Jacob Tremblay (Room):

Some thoughts:

Jaeden Leiberher is still holding on to those Midnight Special goggles? Colin Trevorrow is slated to direct Star Wars: Episode IX, which makes notorious uberfan Tremblay just one degree removed from the franchise. It's been said ad nauseum, »

A Monster Calls Poster Awakens a Wild Creature

16 June 2016 9:19 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

This fall, one of the most unique movies will be, without a doubt, A Monster Calls. The family drama will introduce legendary actor Liam Neeson as a mythical creature who befriends a young boy. Today, we have your first look at the official one-sheet poster, which gives us a sneak peek at this monster in hiding. The tagline promises that 'Stores are Wild Creatures'.

A Monster Calls is a visually spectacular drama from director J.A. Bayona (The Impossible). 12-year-old Conor (Lewis MacDougall), dealing with his mother's (Felicity Jones) illness, a less-than-sympathetic grandmother (Sigourney Weaver), and bullying classmates, finds a most unlikely ally when a Monster appears at his bedroom window. Ancient, wild, and relentless, the Monster guides Conor on a journey of courage, faith, and truth. Toby Kebbell plays Conor's father, and Liam Neeson stars in performance-capture and voiceover as the nocturnally visiting Monster of the title.

A Monsters Call comes as an interesting change of pace for Neeson, who has become an action icon in the later half of his extraordinary career. The movie is an adaptation of Patrick Ness' beloved novel, with the writer adapting his own screenplay. As of yet, we haven't really gotten a great look at the monstrosity hiding at the core of this heart-tugging fantasy. But he is starting to come into focus here on this teaser.

The movie's story is actually based on an original idea by the late Siobhan Dowd. A British writer and activist, she is best known for a body of work that appeals to children and young adults. A Monster Calls has been published in almost 30 languages, and the novel has won many prestigious prizes worldwide, including the distinguished Carnegie Medal and, for illustrator Jim Kay, the Kate Greenaway Medal.

Bel&#233n Atienza is producing, marking her third collaboaration with Bayona, following The Impossible and his directorial debut, The Orphanage. Executive producers include Participant's Jeff Skoll and Jonathan King, along with River Road's Bill Pohlad and Mitch Horwits. Production on A Monster Calls got under way last September, with principal photography taking place in Spain and England.

A Monster Calls is set for release on October 21, 2016, which puts it up against Lionsgate's Boo! A Madea Halloween Story, Paramount's Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, 20th Century Fox's Keeping Up With the Joneses, Universal's Ouija: Origin of Evil and PureFlix's I'm Not Ashamed. Coincidentally, Felicity Jones also stars in Inferno, arriving October 14, meaning she will have two of her projects debut in back-to-back weekends. While we await the next trailer for A Monster Calls, which may give us a better look at this wild creature, take a look at the first poster and marvel at the adventure that awaits.

Hayley Atwell shares her thoughts on Captain America and Sharon Carter kiss

6 June 2016 1:18 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

During an appearance at Dallas Comic Con Fan Expo, Hayley Atwell was asked what Peggy Carter would have made of the kiss between Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) and Peggy’s niece Sharon Carter (Emily VanCamp) in Captain America: Civil War, with the Agent Carter star offering up a rather light-hearted response.

“Well, first of all she’d be turning over in her grave,” replied the Agent Carter star. “She’d be like ‘no.’ And she’d inject herself with the blue serum and become a super villain. She’d break out of her coffin and ground [Sharon]. She’d ground her. Then she’d kick Steve’s ass as well.  I just feel that, you know – I wouldn’t want to date my great aunt’s guy. It just feels like it crosses an incestuous boundary. And Peggy just died. That’s even more disrespectful, right? It’s like, ‘don’t touch that. »
