Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts in August: Osage County: Duel of the Oscar winners [See previous post: "Oscar 2014 Watch: Harvey Weinstein Cannes Film Festival Coming Attractions."] More Oscar 2014 bait: August: Osage County, directed by John Wells, and starring three-time Oscar winner Meryl Streep (Kramer vs. Kramer, Sophie’s Choice, The Iron Lady) and Oscar winner Julia Roberts (Erin Brockovich). Is it mere coincidence that Streep’s seventeenth Oscar nomination and third win was for her portrayal of British prime minister Margaret Thatcher in Phyllida Lloyd’s The Iron Lady — distributed by The Weinstein Company two years ago? Either way, Streep’s Oscar 2014 competition should be fierce, as Julia Roberts doesn’t seem to be wearing any makeup in the family drama. Since September, Spain has unleashed two of its three biggest movies ever: Juan Antonio Bayona’s The Impossible with a $172.5 million gross worldwide and Andy Muschietti’s “Mama” at $135.8 million gross and counting.
Only Alejandro Amenabar’s “The Others” ($203.9 million) has grossed more.
These box office watermarks come, however, as Spain suffers its worst recession in decades. Piracy, on top of an 8% to 21% hike in sales taxes on cinema tickets, has withered cinema attendance, down 2.5% in the first quarter of 2013, while leaping 12.5% in Germany and 11% in the U.K.
In 2012, 163 Spanish movies were shot, down 15% from 2010. And the number of high-end films, offering big paydays, has plunged far more steeply, slashing shoot costs.
In April, Alta Films closed Alta Classics, Spain’s biggest arthouse/crossover distributor.
“With Spain’s piracy, a 21% cinema tax, 6.2 million unemployed and broadcasters not buying your films, you simply can’t survive,” says Alta’s Enrique Gonzalez-Kuhn. »

Petra Nemcova was left 'shaking' while watching 'The Impossible'. The Czech supermodel suffered horrific injuries during the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami - which occurred on December 26 in Thailand - and her photographer fiancé Simon Atlee was killed. Petra has revealed it was incredibly difficult to relive the tragedy when it was retold on the big screen in the Oscar-nominated movie starring Naomi Watts. Speaking exclusively to Bang Showbiz at the F&F autumn/winter 2013 fashion show on Thursday (16.05.13), she said: 'It was hard to see because the film is [set] in the same hotel where I was and the same beach where I was, and the first half of the film was 90 per cent of »

Christmas 2004 a huge tsunami hit Thailand leaving behind death and destruction that horrified the world. Maria Bennet (Naomi Watts) her husband Henry (Ewan McGregor) and their three sons Lucas (Tom Holland), Tomas and Simon are on vacation in Thailand when the unexpected tsunami hits. One film released last year that received a mountain of criticism was Timur Bekmambetov’s Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. A bonkers tale of the legendary 16th Us President’s extracurricular (supernatural) activities that I blooming well loved. I think it’s sometimes forgotten that you visit the cinema, more often then not, for a fun time and I was certainly rewarded with that even if others didn’t feel the same.
We now have word that that films lead, Benjamin Walker, is in final negotiations to join Chris Hemsworth (Thor) and Tom Holland (The Impossible) in director Ron Howard’s In The Heart Of The Sea, currently in pre-production over at Warner Bros. It will be an adaptation of Nathaniel Philbrick’s fact-based 2000 novel about the infamous whale attack on The Essex, which was the true story that inspired Herman Melville’s best-seller Moby Dick.
Walker will play a character named George Pollard, »

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter's Benjamin Walker is in talks to join In the Heart of the Sea.
The film will be directed by Academy Award winner Ron Howard.
Walker is slated to play the character George Pollard, and will appear opposite Chris Hemsworth and The Impossible's Tom Holland, Deadline reports.
In The Heart Of The Sea is adapted from the Nathaniel Philbrick book of the same name.
Pollard is described as the privileged son of a whaling family, and was captain of the Essex, a ship which was attacked and sunk by a whale in 1820. The incident is said to have inspired Herman Melville's 1851 novel Moby-Dick.
The script for the movie has been written by Blood Diamond's Charles Leavitt.

Director Juan Antonio Bayona delivers a tear-jerking powerhouse of a film with The Impossible. Unlike most dramatic films, The Impossible sets itself up as a disaster film, but slowly unfolds as a drama about a family finding the courage and hope to remain strong in a time of death and chaos. The film features remarkable special effects sequences, that when combined with the on-screen drama make for a truly horrifying, yet impressive experience. But none of that would have mattered had it not been for Naomi Watts, who gives one of her best performances of her career, filling the film with so much fearlessness and unshakable motivation. The Impossible isn’t an easy film to digest, but it’s one of the most inspirational tales of survival that I’ve seen in years.
The film follows Maria (Naomi Watts) and Henry (Ewan McGregor), who are vacationing with their three young boys in Southeast Asia. »

The Impossible, 2012.
Directed by Juan Antonio Bayona.
Starring Naomi Watts, Ewan McGregor and Tom Holland.
Synopsis:
The story of a tourist family in Thailand caught in the destruction and chaotic aftermath of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.
When The Impossible hit cinemas earlier this year, the hype surrounding it was insane. Not only where there reports of people fainting while watching it, but there was a lot of hubbub about the change in the protagonist’s nationality. With the film now hitting DVD shelves, the questions now are – does the film hold up without the ‘cinema experience’ and, does it really matter that the family is British?
Based on true events, The Impossible tells the story of a tourist family who sadly were caught in the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami and split apart from each other. The movie then follows this separated family as they ride along an emotional journey of survival and hope. »

He was last seen on the big screen battling the undead in the distinctly mixed Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. Now it seems Benjamin Walker will need to find his sea legs, because his next foe could well be an angry whale and the cruel logic of survival if he joins the cast of Ron Howard’s In The Heart Of The Sea.Howard already has Chris Hemsworth and The Impossible’s Tom Holland set to star in the based-on-truth tale of the Nantucket whaling ship the Essex, whose tragic fate served as the inspiration for Moby Dick.In possibly the worst thing to happen to something called Essex until The Only Way Is Essex arrived, the ship was destroyed in 1820 by a vengeful sperm whale.Stranded in a lifeboat thousands of miles from home, 20 of the surviving crew (the survivors included the captain and first officer) planned to make for an isolated tropical island, »

The stories surrounding the production of Jane Got a Gun will not be soon forgotten, but thankfully it looks like things are finally falling into place for the anticipated film.
Details remain unknown as to why director Lynne Ramsey exited the project as production was starting, and since then, there has been a spiral of knock-on effects that have threatened to bring the film to its knees. But producers Scott Steindorff and Natalie Portman have remained resilient, and have been working incredibly hard to pull off the herculean feat of seeing the film through to production.
Following Ramsey’s exit, the filmmakers brought in Gavin O’Connor (Warrior) to replace her in the director’s chair.
But then the production lost its main villain in the form of Jude Law, who had initially signed on because of his interest with working with Ramsey. In his place came Bradley Cooper, who »

★★★☆☆ Based on the harrowing true story of one family caught up in the 2004 tsunami, Spanish director Juan Antonio Bayona (The Orphanage) returned to screens last year with The Impossible (Lo imposible, 2012), a gruelling yet uplifting tale of human endurance amidst a cataclysmic natural disaster. Much was made at the time of Bayona's decision to change the aforementioned family's nationality from Spanish (Belón) to British (Bennett), presumably to make the film more saleable in English-language territories. Claims of 'white-washing' still remain slightly misplaced, but there is something missing from this well-intentioned drama.
Maria (Naomi Watts), husband Henry (Ewan McGregor) and the married couple's three sons (Tom Holland, Samuel Joslin, Oaklee Pendergast) are en route to a popular Thai coastal resort for a much-needed winter vacation. After spending an idyllic Christmas Day together, the holidaymakers begin their Boxing Day relaxing around the complex's pool. Suddenly, a terrifying roar rises up from the direction of the beach, »

Exclusive: The resilient indie Western Jane Got A Gun finally has its bad guy. Ewan McGregor is negotiating to play the pivotal role of the leader of an outlaw gang in the film that Gavin O’Connor is now directing. Natalie Portman plays the wife of an outlaw (Noah Emmerich) who leaves that gang after he gets shot up, and returns home. Knowing his former outlaw mates will come to finish him off and destroy her farm, Jane is forced to rekindle a relationship with a past love (Joel Edgerton), a capable gunman who can help her. This is the role that Jude Law originally was going to play, but he exited when original director Lynne Ramsay abruptly left the night before production began. After O’Connor came on to replace Ramsay behind the camera, they got Bradley Cooper to play the part, but his schedule is so impossibly busy »
