'Lucy' Wins Brain vs. Brawn Battle This Weekend

27 July 2014 1:17 PM, PDT | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

Scarlett Johansson easily out-muscled Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson on the final weekend of a very weak month at the box office. In another big win for Universal Pictures, Lucy took first place with over $43.9 million. Meanwhile, Hercules had to settle for runner-up with a lukewarm $29.8 million debut.Overall, the Top 12 earned $136.8 million this weekend; that's down 13 percent from the same frame last year.Lucy's opening weekend didn't quite match similar movies like Wanted ($50.9 million) or Taken 2 ($49.5 million). The fact that it even came close, though, is a fairly remarkable feat for this moderately-budgeted original action movie. Among other similar titles, it crushed The Bourne Legacy ($38.1 million) and Salt ($36 million). It's also the fourth Universal Pictures release to open north of $35 million this year; the other three are Lone Survivor, Ride Along and Neighbors. This is even more impressive considering all four titles are "original" (i.e. not sequels, »

'Lucy' Kills with $17.1 Million On Friday

26 July 2014 9:31 AM, PDT | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

Based on Friday results, at least, the Summer box office slump seems to be drawing to an end this weekend.Sci-fi action movie Lucy opened in first place with an exceptional $17.1 million haul. Meanwhile, Hercules outperformed modest expectations, though it will probably still fall short of $30 million this weekend.Lucy's $17.1 million debut is significantly higher than Angelina Jolie's Salt, which took in $12.5 million on opening day in July 2010. More impressive is the fact that Lucy opened nearly on par with action sequels Taken 2 and The Bourne Supremacy (both around $18.4 million). The Scarlett Johannson flick did receive a poor "C+" CinemaScore, which suggests word-of-mouth will be mixed. Still, it's guaranteed to earn at least $43 million this weekend, and could wind up near $47 million.Playing at 3,595 theaters, Hercules opened to an estimated $11.05 million on Friday. That's roughly equal to the $10.6 million that last month's Edge of Tomorrow earned on opening day. »

Forecast: 'Lucy' to Beat Up 'Hercules' This Weekend

24 July 2014 4:31 PM, PDT | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

Friday Am Update: Lucy and Hercules both did solid business on Thursday night. Lucy earned an estimated $2.75 million, while Hercules scored an estimated $2.1 million. Among Summer releases, Lucy is above The Purge: Anarchy ($2.6 million), while Hercules topped Edge of Tomorrow ($1.8 million). For the weekend, both movies are going to earn at least $20 million.Forecast: On the final weekend of July, two very different action movies will try to reverse the domestic box office's downward trend. Hercules has a much bigger budget and arguably more star power in Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, but the sword-and-sandals epic doesn't appear to be connecting with moviegoers. In contrast, Lucy's eye-catching visuals and intriguing "what if" story has put it on pace for an opening north of $30 million, which should be enough to take first place this weekend. At the start of Summer, Lucy's box office potential didn't look so hot. The movie was scheduled for August 8th, »

Matt Reeves talks Planet of the Apes 3

With Dawn of the Planet of the Apes currently tearing up the box office and garnering near universal praise [read our two ★★★★★ reviews here and here], director Matt Reeves has offered up some insight into where the already-announced third movie (which is set for July 26th, 2016) may head during an interview with The Playlist. Be warned, spoilers for the end of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

Mark Bomback and I are going to be writing the next one and we have a lot of ideas but you know we’re going to take a moment to breathe. We just finished this one so we’ll see where it goes but we have a lot of ideas we just have to sit down and start it all up again. But it’s really important to me that whatever we do next is something that can be better than Dawn, so hopefully we can achieve that aim. »
