MTV renews 'Catfish,' sends 'Shannara' to series

1 hour ago | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

MTV kicked off its Television Critics Association press tour day on Friday (July 11) with a big series pickup, a big renewal and a slew of premiere dates. The renewal is, if my Twitter feed is any indication, an important one: "Catfish: The TV Show" has been picked up for a fourth season. The adaptation of the hit Sundance documentary, "Catfish: The TV Show" is Wednesday's top original cable series among viewers 12-34.  Shouldn't the ongoing existence of "Catfish" make it harder and harder for the obfuscations necessary for the ongoing existence of "Catfish"? I would thing so. But I would apparently be wrong. MTV also gave a series order to "Shannara," based on the Terry Brooks fantasy series. "Smallville" veterans Al Gough and Miles Millar are serving as writers and executive producers on the 10-episode first season, with Jonathan Liebesman ("Wrath of the Titans") directing the first two episodes.  If »

‘Shannara’ Fantasy Drama Lands Series Order From MTV

3 hours ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

MTV has given a 10-episode order to “Shannara” in the hopes of building its own “Lord of the Rings”-like fantasy franchise out of the book series by Terry Brooks.

Feature helmer Jonathan Liebesman has signed on to direct the first two hours of the series, to be shepherded by showrunners Miles Millar and Alfred Gough for Sonar Entertainment.

Millar and Gough have deep experience in the genre through their long run on WB/CW’s “Smallville.” Millar and Gough exec produce with Liebesman, Brooks, Dan Farah and Jon Favreau. Favreau had been attached to direct the project but has bowed out due to scheduling conflicts.

The “Shannara” novels, which Brooks began writing in the late 1970s, have bounced around Hollywood in film and TV development for years. MTV’s plan is to start the series with the second novel in the 17-book series, “The Elfstones of Shannara.” Series will »

‘Tmnt’ TV Spot & Motion Posters: Weapons Turned Heroes

3 hours ago | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Mixed feelings among longtime Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fans aside, the upcoming movie reboot isn’t looking too shabby. The action sequences in the film appear sufficiently flashy and stylized (if nothing else), thanks to director Jonathan Liebesman (Wrath of the Titans) and producer Michael Bay (Transformers: Age of Extinction). Likewise, such elements as the Turtles’ personalities, the story, and the film’s general sense of humor, seem to be hitting the intended mark.

The first trailer for the Tmnt reboot revealed that, in an intriguing twist on the title character’s origins, the villain Eric (William Fichtner) was responsible for creating the Turtles, with the intention of using them (presumably) as weapons – something elaborated upon in a new TV spot (see above, courtesy of Cbm), which includes previously-unseen footage from the film.

Admittedly, in the above TV spot when Leonardo is saying, via voiceover narration, ...

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Motion Posters Have Arrived

14 hours ago | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

We're about a month away from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which means the ad campaign is about to head into overdrive. Goody. The Platinum Dunes-produced remake (ack, those words need to stop being in the same sentence) was always an inevitability, so we all should have expected the corresponding ads to tip the scales of insanely busy obnoxiousness. In case you thought otherwise, here are some brand new motion posters! Oh, motion posters, the sonnet of the 21st century. Complex has the debut of the motion poster above, showcasing Raphael. Because it is a contemporary movie made by people who became wealthy making bad movies (specifically Jonathan Liebesman, of Wrath Of The Titans fame), Raphael is a big screaming blur who fights some of the Foot Clan, pushes a giant fan, then slide down an avalanche and into a car in "awesome" slow motion. Or, if you're not paying super »

Four 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' Motion Posters

10 July 2014 9:31 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

On Tuesday's podcast we got to considering the box office prospects of the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie and took a quick look back at just how awful the 2007 Tmnt movie turned out. It was alarming to look back at the pictures and realize how I remembered virtually nothing about that movie and yet it was a movie I covered rather extensively leading up to its release including extended coverage from the 2006 Comic Con. The 2007 Turtles movie brought in $95.6 million worldwide and while it didn't have the budget this newest installment clearly has I can't really tell if this new adaptation of the "Turtles" story is really going to attract that many more eyeballs. After all, the concept is still the same and it's not as if they've changed the target demographic and while the Nickelodeon show does appear to be popular, are the Turtles really all that much »

Doubling Down on Disappointment: Pacific Rim 2

Anghus Houvouras on Legendary Pictures’ decision to double down on Pacific Rim 2

$400 million. That’s the line. The threshold your movie has to cross in order for your big budget studio tent-pole film to be considered for a franchise. The veritable break-even number for films that in this risk averse studio system will warrant consideration for another installment.

The recent announcement that Pacific Rim is going to get a sequel was something of a surprise seeing how the first film was seen as a disappointment. In the United States the film barely cracked the the $100 million mark. Internationally, it fared better bringing the worldwide total to $400 million. Given the movies’ sizable budget and P.R. campaign, the movie didn’t recover its initial investment. It was by no means a bomb, but you couldn’t exactly call it a hit either. It was an average film with an average performance, »

‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ & ‘Hercules’ TV Spots: Bring on the Action

7 July 2014 6:59 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Paramount and Michael Bay’s Transformers movie franchise continues to make big bank, with the latest installment, Age of Extinction, currently enjoying a reign atop the worldwide box office. The studio is hoping for similar success with the upcoming Bay-produced Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles live-action film reboot, which arrives in a month; a couple weeks before then, however, Paramount is going to unleash a new Hercules movie (starring Dwayne Johnson), in order to keep the cash flowing as Summer 2014 continues on.

Tmnt, as illustrated by the above “Family” TV spot, is a flashy contemporary take on the property generated in the 1980s – one directed by Jonathan Liebesman (Wrath of the Titans), but with the stylized action and PG-13 humor that’ve become strongly associated with Bay’s Transformers movies. (It doesn’t help that Megan Fox has been featured in the relaunch (read: first) installments for ...

Stalingrad Helmer Fedor Bondarchuk Snags Warner Bros.’ Greek Epic Odysseus

2 July 2014 8:34 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

The first big-budget Russian blockbuster, WWII epic Stalingrad, was an absolutely stunning visual experience, and when it became the highest-grossing film in Russian cinematic history, it seemed pretty clear that we hadn’t heard the last of its director, Fedor Bondarchuk. Now, it appears that Warner Bros. has recruited the helmer to direct its big-budget Greek epic Odysseus, which aims to turn the classic tale transcribed in Homer’s The Odyssey into an action-packed spectacle.

Bondarchuk, the son of Oscar-winning helmer Sergei Bondarchuk (who received the Best Foreign Film Oscar for his movie War and Peace back in 1968), made Stalingrad for around $30 million, and the flick went on to gross $66 million, setting records in Russia. It was also the first Russian movie to be shot in IMAX 3D. Despite Stalingrad featuring a huge amount of battle sequences, Bondarchuk kept the budget low by staging everything without the use of green screen or extensive special effects, »
