Ian McShane Joining Sacha Baron Cohen's Spy Comedy 'Grimsby'

10 June 2014 7:30 AM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Following the success of Now You See Me, we're interested to see what director Louis Leterrier does with a little more comedy in the mix with Grimsby. The film stars Mark Strong as a British black ops spy forced to go on the run and team up with his idiotic English football hooligan brother, played by Borat and The Dictator star Sacha Baron Cohen. THR reports the cast has expanded with the addition of Hercules and Jack the Giant Slayer star Ian McShane, Precious and Tower Heist star Gabourey Sidibe, "Homeland" star David Harewood and British comedian Johnny Vegas, however, specific roles were not revealed. The best part of this news is definitely McShane being added to the mix. The actor is better known for roles in dramas and thrillers, but his more rare turns in comedies like Hot Rod are absolutely great. Otherwise, we're not sure what's so appealing about Gabourey Sidibe anymore. »

'Borat' Director Larry Charles Takes on 'The Man Who Sued God'

29 May 2014 8:34 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

It was revealed today that Larry Charles (Borat, The Dictator, TV's Seinfeld, Curb Your Enthusiasm) will write a reimagined version of the cult Australian hit The Man Who Sued God for New Films International (Nfi) with an eye toward directing.

Nfi founder and President Nesim Hason and Mace Neufeld (The Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games, Sony's upcoming The Equalizer with Denzel Washington) are producing the new project with Sixth Sense Productions principals Richard Harding and Sam Feuer (The First Grader).

Charles' take on The Man Who Sued God is expected to veer from the original premise, which involves a former lawyer who had found happiness with a simpler life and career - until a natural disaster strikes and he is denied insurance money because it was 'an act of God'. He re-registers as a lawyer and sues the insurance company and the church under the guise of God, defending himself. »

Larry Charles to Write, May Direct, 'The Man Who Sued God' Comedy

29 May 2014 3:48 PM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Since he's no longer at the helm of A Walk in the Woods, director Larry Charles (Borat, The Dictator) is on the hunt for a new project, and it seems he's found one. Deadline has word that New Films International has hired Charles, who was also behind "Curb Your Enthusiasm" and "Seinfeld," to write The Man Who Sued God, based on a 2001 Australian cult favorite of the same name. Charles also has expressed interest in directing the film where he'll put his own spin on the story about an ex-lawyer who files a claim against God himself after his insurance company dismisses the destruction of his boat as an “act of God.” Read on! Here's the trailer for the original Australian comedy from 2001: As you can see, Billy Connolly starred in the original film, and it opened at #1 at the box office down under. There was already a Bollywood remake, »

Larry Charles to Write and Possibly Direct The Man Who Sued God Remake

29 May 2014 3:34 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

While the period of time between original films and their eventual remakes is getting shorter and shorter, some projects just call out to certain filmmakers.  As such, Larry Charles has been set to pen the New Films International remake of The Man Who Sued God.  The original 2001 Australian film from director Mark Joffe starred Billy Connolly as a lawyer-turned-fisherman whose only possession - his boat - is destroyed by lightning.  When the insurance company turns down his claim citing the uncovered "acts of God", he decides not to take on the deep-pocketed insurance men, but rather God himself.  Charles will write the script with an eye to direct.  Hit the jump for more,  including the trailer for the original film. Deadline reports that Charles will write the remake of The Man Who Sued God with a possibility of directing.  He's said to be putting his own spin on the story in his reimagining. »

A Brief History of Celebrities Being Attacked on the Red Carpet (Video)

29 May 2014 7:30 AM, PDT | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

Brad Pitt, you're not alone.

Plenty of A-list celebs have been attacked in very public places, mostly on the red carpet, on stage, or, you know, on the way to court.

Here, we offer a brief history -- going back about 10 years -- of some of the most notable attacks on Hollywood's biggest names.

Brad Pitt Is Attacked at the 'Maleficent' Premiere (2014)

Last night (May 28, 2014), Vitalii Sediuk, a Ukrainian journalist who has made a "career" out of humiliating celebrities on the red carpet, broke through a barrier and allegedly attacked Pitt before being hauled away by police. But don't worry. From what we can tell, Pitt's beautiful face came away unscathed.

The madness of Sediuk can be traced back to the 2012 premiere of "Men in Black 3," where he tried to kiss star Will Smith on the red carpet. Smith was not having it, and slapped Sediuk. The next year, »

Jason Mantzoukas and More Are Also 'Sleeping with Other People'

15 May 2014 3:15 PM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Hopefully you've had some sort of experience with the comedic force that is Jason Mantzoukas. He's not a household name, but he's been seen in the likes of The Dictator, Baby Mama and has a small role in Neighbors, not to mention roles in shows like "The League" and "Englightened." He'll been seen this summer in the stellar parody They Came Together (don't let the unflattering trailer steer you away), and now he's just booked a supporting role in the new comedy Sleeping with Other People, starring Jason Sudeikis, Alison Brie and Adam Scott. But Mantzoukas isn't the only new cast member entering the mix. A press release from Sidney Kimmel Entertainment has revealed that Amanda Peet (The Way Way Back, Saving Silverman) and Natasha Lyonne (American Pie) are in the film too. The press release says the three new cast members and previously announced names are all headlining the film, »

Mark Strong has played both heroes and villains and we know he can be funny when it counts. Cast of Joe Wright's Peter Pan Film Fills Out as Production Begins

Warner Bros. announced the start of production on Joe Wright's Pan, a film said to be an origin story and darker take on J.M. Barrie's beloved character Peter Pan, and with it comes a list of the entire cast. The casting of Mara as Tiger Lilly gained a certain amount of scrutiny, but it would appear the rest of Wright's cast has been filled in with a rather eclectic group of actors, including Australian Aboriginal actor Jack Charles (pictured) playing Tiger Lily's father known as The Chief. The big blockbusters of summer 2015

Feature Simon Brew 31 Mar 2014 - 05:42

Blockbuster season is almost upon us, but what will next summer's big hitters be? Here's a roundup

Once upon a time, summer blockbuster season 2015 was set to be packed with the biggest collision of big franchises we'd ever seen together. However, one by one, lots of these films moved away to other dates. As such, you won't be seeing Star Wars: Episode VII, Pirates Of The Caribbean 5, Independence Day 2, Batman Vs Superman or Finding Dory in a cinema next summer.

But even with those films gone, there's still no shortage of huge movies battling for your cash in a year's time. And as is traditional for us at the start of summer blockbuster season, we've taken a look at what's coming up in 12 months' time.

We kick off at the start of April (although note that March has Kenneth Branagh’s live action Cinderella movie, »

Billy Crystal is coming back to the small screen, and not just via his upcoming HBO special. Crystal's new comedy pilot, "The Comedians," has received a series order from FX, according to Deadline. The premise finds Crystal's veteran comic character teaming up with Josh Gad's young up-and-comer for a sketch show. The pilot was written and directed by Larry Charles ("The Dictator," "Curb Your Enthusiasm"), who also serves as the show's executive producer along with Crystal, Matt Nix ("Burn Notice") and Ben Wexler ("Community"). Based off the Swedish series "Ulveson and Herngren," "The Comedians" is a half-hour, single camera comedy that will certainly bring in an older demographic than FX usually attracts with shows like "Archer" and "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia." When Tony Benn met Ali G - a rare, honest politician holding his own

14 March 2014 4:50 AM, PDT | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - TV news news »

Before Borat, Bruno and The Dictator, Sacha Baron Cohen was Ali G.

A shard of light in Channel 4's otherwise forgettable 11 'O Clock Show (who's heard of that "Ricky Gervais" character since?), Cohen's comic creation would simply lampoon the great and good.

Often, Cohen's victim's appeared to bend over backward in a bid to show some non-existent "yoof" credentials.

Honesty being his defining virtue, Tony Benn, who died this morning at the age of 88, refused to play that game - a rare man pushing back against the ridiculous views being spouted opposite him.

"You're not living in the real world, my friend," Benn spluttered indignantly.

"You're living in a world where just everybody is just so bloody greedy that there's no hope of building a better society, and that's why we're in a mess."

Adeel Akhtar Is Smee in Joe Wright's 'Peter Pan' Adaptation

Just one day after Rooney Mara entered negotiations to play Tiger Lily in Pan, Adeel Akhtar has joined the cast as Smee.

The project puts a new spin on author J.M. Barrie's beloved Peter Pan, with young Peter being whisked away to Neverland for the first time, leading the locals in a rebellion against the nefarious pirate Blackbeard (Hugh Jackman). Garrett Hedlund stars as Captain Hook, who starts out as an ally to young Peter Pan, before turning to his nefarious ways. Smee, who was portrayed by Bob Hoskins in Steven Spielberg's 1991 adaptation Hook, is the right-hand man to Hook. The producers still have not cast Peter Pan at this time.

Our report from yesterday revealed that director Joe Wright is setting up a multi-cultural cast, in an effort to challenge the audience's pre-conceived notions of these classic characters. Jason Fuchs wrote the script, with Greg Berlanti, Paul Webster and Sarah Schechter producing. »

Lawrence Sher Directing O' Lucky Day

6 March 2014 12:50 AM, PST | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Back in October we brought you the news that Peter Dinklage had signed up for a Bad Santa-like "R-rated leprechaun comedy". At the time the Paramount project was untitled and didn't have a director in place, but both those issues have now been rectified. The film is called O' Lucky Day, and the director will be Lawrence Sher.Sher is following Wally Pfister's recent form, seizing the director's chair following a successful career as a cinematographer. In particular, he's known for his association with Todd Phillips, acting as Dp on all three Hangover films and Due Date. He also shot Garden State, The ChumscrubberDan In Real Life, Paul and The Dictator. But it's not all indies and comedies: he recently contributed some additional photography to Godzilla. The only plot synopsis available for O' Lucky Day so far is that it involves Dinklage trying to pass himself off as a real leprechaun. »
