With a dip of just 14% from the previous weekend, Gravity easily resisted the challenge of a bunch of mid-level newcomers, retaining the box-office crown with £4.84m. After 11 days, Alfonso Cuarón's space-set drama has grossed an impressive £14.71m, with 3D contributing 90% of the tally.
Although Gravity has a long way to go to match the year's very biggest live-action hits such as Les Misérables, Iron Man 3 and Man of Steel, the film is a dead cert to be the top grosser for a film not based on an existing property or established characters. Currently, the top live-action non-sequel that is not based on familiar elements is Django Unchained, with £15.7m, although some might argue that Quentin Tarantino »

October has come to an end, and that can only mean one thing – it's time for Peter Travers to break out the scum bucket. Even though this month has featured a handful of great pictures, including 12 Years a Slave, Captain Phillips and Gravity, Hollywood produced no shortage of dreck, starting with the pure "paycheck crap" that is Insidious 2.
Update: December is looking more sparse. Two movies were recently bumped to 2014. The Monuments Men starring Matt Damon, George Clooney and will be shown February 7 and the Chris Pine-starrer Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit is now scheduled for Jan. 17.

For the second week in a row, "Fifty Shades of Grey" is dominating the competition on Movie Power Rankings. With the departure of Charlie Hunnam from the upcoming big screen adaptation of E.L. James' steamy S&M story, Universal is on the lookout for some new blood. Among the many names reportedly being considered to play Christian Grey is "True Blood's" Alexander Skarsgard. Other rumors have Jamie Dornan ("Once Upon a Time"), Theo James ("Underworld: Awakening"), and Christian Cooke (2013's "Romeo and Juliet") trying on the infamous necktie. Whoever is cast, the studio had better hurry up and decide -- summer 2014 is not that far away. As for the »

Hailee Steinfeld was Oscar-nominated for her role in True Grit at just 13. Now she's back with a gravity-defying role in Ender's Game, and the lead in Romeo and Juliet. She tells Tim Adams how to handle school bullies, stand up to Jeff Bridges, fake falling in love – and make the Coen Brothers laugh
The last time we saw Hailee Steinfeld, she had fallen down a hole and was being menaced by rattlesnakes. By that climactic point in the Coen Brothers' 2010 version of True Grit, she had so stolen the show as a debutante actor in the daunting company of Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon and Josh Brolin that you had no doubt she would face down the ordeal. Steinfeld had been chosen for the role of the pigtailed Mattie Ross, heroine of the Charles Portis novel, from an open audition of 150,000 girls in her native California. The idea of a star »

Is the field narrowing for Charlie Hunnam's replacement on "Fifty Shades of Grey"? According to EW, Universal employees are being told a decision is coming within a few weeks (though why this is being announced company wide seems a bit odd), which makes sense if the studio wants to reassure everyone the film won't face delays. And yet another name has joined the fray of contenders. According to Just Jared, Scott Eastwood—son of Clint, and rising actor who will be seen next year in "Fury" with Brad Pitt—is reportedly "one of five actors being considered” for the part of Christian Grey. So does that mean one of the recently rumored names—Alexander Skarsgård, Jamie Dornen ("The Fall"), Theo James ("Divergent," "Underworld: Awakening"), Christian Cooke (the most recent "Romeo And Juliet"), Francois Arnaud ("The Borgias")—is now out of the running? Maybe? Whoever gets chosen, there will howls »
